(AP) ? A brave scout leader who may have prevented further violence has emerged as an unlikely hero in the apparent terror attack that left one man dead on the streets of London.

Ingrid Loyau-Kennett got off a bus and tried to reason with the two attackers after she tried to help the man lying on the street but found he had no pulse and was already dead.

The 48-year-old mother kept talking to the two bloody attackers before police came, trying to keep them calm.

Loyau-Kennett, who lives in Cornwall in southwest England, told several British media outlets Wednesday night and Thursday morning that she was returning from a trip to France and was visiting her children in London when the bus she was on stopped because of the melee.

She said she saw a crashed car and the victim lying on the street and tried to help him since she had been trained in first aid. She had determined the man was dead by the time the attackers confronted her.

She said a man "with a black hat and a revolver in one hand and a cleaver in the other came over" and excitedly warned her to stay away from the body.

"I asked him why he had done what had had done," The Guardian quoted her as saying. "He said he had killed the man because he (the victim) was a British soldier who killed Muslim women and children in Iraq and Afghanistan. He was furious about the British Army being over there."

When the man told him he was going to kill police when they arrived, she asked him if that was reasonable and tried to keep him engaged.

Then she spoke to the other attacker, who she described as quiet and shy.

"I asked him if he wanted to give me what he was holding in his hand, which was a knife, but I didn't want to say that," she said. "He didn't agree and I asked him: 'Do you want to carry on?' He said: 'No, no, no.' I didn't want to upset him," she is quoted as saying in The Guardian.

Loyau-Kennett said she was not scared and that the armed men did not seem to be drunk or on drugs. She said she was trying to keep them occupied so they didn't get more agitated.

She re-boarded her bus shortly before police arrived, watching from the bus as police shot the two suspects, who are both receiving treatment in hospital.

"The officers shot them in the legs, I think" she says in The Guardian.

Sports Business Awards bring some attention to Louisville

Among University of Louisville Tom Jurich's accomplishments in 2012 was getting an invitation for U of L to join the Atlantic Coast Conference.?

SportsBusiness Journal and SportsBusiness Daily, sister publications to Business First, handed out their annual honors Wednesday night in New York City, and Louisvillians had reason to cheer.

First, University of Louisville athletic director Tom Jurich was a finalist for AD of the Year recognition. (Jurich won the award in 2007.)

While this year's AD of the Year award went to the late Mal Moore, former athletic director at the University of Alabama, U of L fans can?t help but be elated about all that the Cardinals have accomplished in the past year. (Click here to read a report about accomplishments during Jurich's tenure at U of L.)

The local community also might be interested to know that the 2012 U.S. Grand Prix was recognized as Sports Event of the Year.

Given that the race was held at a new Formula One racetrack in Austin, Texas, why would Louisville residents care?

Because the president and CEO of the venue, Circuit of the Americas, is Steve Sexton, former president of Churchill Downs racetrack.

Sexton, who accepted the award on behalf of his company, led Churchill Downs Inc.?s (NASDAQ: CHDN) entertainment unit until it was dissolved, and he left the company in 2010. He has several former Churchill employees working with him at Circuit of the Americas.

The 2013 Sports Business Awards were held Wednesday at The New York Marriott Marquis at Times Square. They were attended by a crowd of sports celebrities and executives.

John R. Karman III covers these beats: Economic development and government, commercial real estate, transportation, utilities, sports business, lottery, tourism/conventions, higher education, nonprofits, Jeffersontown, Downtown, Central Area.

Text communication in Japan: POP3 nearing extinction?

Sample LINE conversation with stampsA recent survey from goo Research, reported on by japan.internet.com, into text-based communication revealed carrier email ruled for mobile users, but SMS was also unexpectedly popular.

Demographics

Between the 7th and 10th of May 2013 1,073 members of the goo Research online monitor group completed a mobile phone (including smartphone) based survey. 54.1% of the sample were female, 2.1% in their teens, 18.6% in their twenties, 38.3% in their thirties, 27.8% in their forties, and 13.1% aged fifty or older.

Quite frankly, I find the mobile carrier SMS figure very difficult to believe, especially as there is no such thing as free texts plans, and they cost 3.5 yen each on docomo at least, and all phones come with carrier email that is usually free and supports much longer messages than SMS. Perhaps many people think that sending an email to another mobile user is SMS? However, talking to a friend, he suggested that emoji on the iPhone are much easier to use in SMS than in email, and also LINE (pictured above) encourages people to use phone numbers, not email addresses.

I use pretty much everything listed here, except for SMS and SNS. I use Google Hangouts for social chat, which I suppose counts as a voice call service, especially now it has become a standalone app rather than the old Messenger that was grafted on to Google Plus.

Research results

Q1: Which of the following text-based communication methods do you use? (Sample size=1,073, multiple answer)

Mobile carrier email 91.2%
Web mail 56.9%
Mobile carrier SMS 48.5%

Voice call service (app, etc) text messaging function (to SQ) 36.3%
Non-web computer-based email 18.5%
Other 0.0%
Don?t use email 1.2%

Q1SQ: Which voice call services? text messaging function do you use? (Sample size=389, multiple answer)

Engineers devise new way to produce clean hydrogen

May 21, 2013 ? Duke University engineers have developed a novel method for producing clean hydrogen, which could prove essential to weaning society off of fossil fuels and their environmental implications.

While hydrogen is ubiquitous in the environment, producing and collecting molecular hydrogen for transportation and industrial uses is expensive and complicated. Just as importantly, a byproduct of most current methods of producing hydrogen is carbon monoxide, which is toxic to humans and animals.

The Duke engineers, using a new catalytic approach, have shown in the laboratory that they can reduce carbon monoxide levels to nearly zero in the presence of hydrogen and the harmless byproducts of carbon dioxide and water. They also demonstrated that they could produce hydrogen by reforming fuel at much lower temperatures than conventional methods, which makes it a more practical option.

Catalysts are agents added to promote chemical reactions. In this case, the catalysts were nanoparticle combinations of gold and iron oxide (rust), but not in the traditional sense. Current methods depend on gold nanoparticles ability to drive the process as the sole catalyst, while the Duke researchers made both the iron oxide and the gold the focus of the catalytic process.

The study appears online in the May issue of the Journal of Catalysis.

"Our ultimate goal is to be able to produce hydrogen for use in fuel cells," said Titilayo "Titi" Shodiya, a graduate student working in the laboratory of senior researcher Nico Hotz, assistant professor of mechanical engineering and materials science at Duke's Pratt School of Engineering. "Everyone is interested in sustainable and non-polluting ways of producing useful energy without fossil fuels," said Shodiya, the paper's first author.

Fuel cells produce electricity through chemical reactions, most commonly involving hydrogen. Also, many industrial processes require hydrogen as a chemical reagent and vehicles are beginning to use hydrogen as a primary fuel source.

"We were able through our system to consistently produce hydrogen with less than 0.002 percent (20 parts per million) of carbon monoxide," Shodiya said.

The Duke researchers achieved these levels by switching the recipe for the nanoparticles used as catalysts for the reactions to oxidize carbon monoxide in hydrogen-rich gases. Traditional methods of cleaning hydrogen, which are not nearly as efficient as this new approach, also involve gold-iron oxide nanoparticles as the catalyst, the researchers said.

"It had been assumed that the iron oxide nanoparticles were only 'scaffolds' holding the gold nanoparticles together, and that the gold was responsible for the chemical reactions," Sodiya said. "However, we found that increasing the surface area of the iron oxide dramatically increased the catalytic activity of the gold."

One of the newest approaches to producing renewable energy is the use of biomass-derived alcohol-based sources, such as methanol. When methanol is treated with steam, or reformed, it creates a hydrogen-rich mixture that can be used in fuel cells.

"The main problem with this approach is that it also produces carbon monoxide, which is not only toxic to life, but also quickly damages the catalyst on fuel cell membranes that are crucial to the functioning of a fuel cell," Hotz said. "It doesn't take much carbon monoxide to ruin these membranes."

The researchers ran the reaction for more than 200 hours and found no reduction in the ability of the catalyst to reduce the amount of carbon monoxide in the hydrogen gas.

"The mechanism for this is not exactly understood yet. However, while current thinking is that the size of the gold particles is key, we believe the emphasis of further research should focus on iron oxide's role in the process," Shodiya said.

The Duke team's research was supported by the California Energy Commission and the Oak Ridge Associated Universities. Duke postdoctoral associates Oliver Schmidt and Wen Peng were also part of the research team.

Practical Tips to Improve Your Credit Rating | Finance Buzz ...

As the economy continues to be in doldrums, lenders are becoming very cautious to the people they give credit facilities. Some lenders charge high interest rates to individuals with poor credit rating as a way of mitigating the default risk involved. A good credit rating will definitely boost the chances of getting financial products such as mortgages, personal loans and credit cards from banks and other lending institutions. On the hindsight, a poor credit rating will limit your borrowing options. It is therefore very important to put strategies in place to improve your credit rating. Discussed below are ways you can improve your credit rating:

Always Pay Your Bills on Time

Never miss to make a loan or a mortgage repayment on time because it will affect your credit scores adversely. Paying your bills on time will avoid incurring penalties that could have reflected in your credit file. If you are in a fix and cannot make to pay your bills on time, talk to your lenders as early as possible.

Cancel All Expired Credit Cards

Most individuals switch cards often but fail to cancel old credit cards even if they no longer use them. When you do not cancel these cards, they still appear on your credit file. This will affect your credit rating negatively. It is therefore recommended that you cancel all the expired credit cards and have this information logged on in your credit file.

Check Your Credit Report Regularly

Ensure that you check your credit report on a regular basis semi-annually or annually from the main credit reference agencies which are Equifax and Experian. Checking your credit file will only cost you ?2 but it is worth it because you will ascertain that the information on your credit report is accurate and up to date. Not all lenders that inform credit reference agencies of all changes that happen in your account right away and therefore you will have the opportunity to ensure that they have the updated details. It is also good to keep a close look for charges in your credit file which may be caused by identity theft or duplicate entries of unpaid balances. If you notice something amiss in your credit report, you should have it rectified immediately to ensure that you have the right rating.

Always Give Correct Information

Ensure that the information you supply on your loans, mortgages and credit cards applications are truthful and accurate. Inconsistencies of information provided will negatively affect your credit rating and may even be considered as a fraud.

Avoid Too Many Enquiries on Your Credit Report

When you are scouring for loans, ensure that lenders do not make equerries about your credit report without your knowledge. Lenders should only access your credit report when you have requested them to do so. Multiple credit checks within a short time spun can affect your credit score since it can imply that you are so desperate to get as much credit as possible even if you are not in a capacity to service all the credits.

Controlling your credit card expenses will also help to improve your credit rating. Aim to maintain your credit card balance at less than 25 % of your overall limit. Whatever the method of improving your credit score you employ, ensure that you are consistent.

Opening doors to foldable electronics with inkjet-printed graphene

May 20, 2013 ? Imagine a bendable tablet computer or an electronic newspaper that could fold to fit in a pocket.

The technology for these devices may not be so far off. Northwestern University researchers have recently developed a graphene-based ink that is highly conductive and tolerant to bending, and they have used it to inkjet-print graphene patterns that could be used for extremely detailed, conductive electrodes.

The resulting patterns are 250 times more conductive than previous attempts to print graphene-based electronic patterns and could be a step toward low-cost, foldable electronics.

A paper describing the research, "Inkjet Printing of High Conductivity, Flexible Graphene Patterns," was published April 8 in the Journal of Physical Chemistry Letters.

"Graphene has a unique combination of properties that is ideal for next-generation electronics, including high electrical conductivity, mechanical flexibility, and chemical stability," said Mark Hersam, professor of materials science and engineering at Northwestern's McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science. "By formulating an inkjet-printable ink based on graphene, we now have an inexpensive and scalable path for exploiting these properties in real-world technologies."

Inkjet printing has previously been explored as a method for fabricating transistors, solar cells, and other electronic components. It is inexpensive, capable of printing large areas, and can create patterns on a variety of substrates, making it an attractive option for next-generation electronics.

Inkjet printing with graphene -- ultra-thin sheets of carbon with exceptional strength and conductivity -- is extremely promising, but it has remained a challenge because it is difficult to harvest a sufficient amount of graphene without compromising its electronic properties. Exfoliating, or breaking apart, materials such as graphite often require oxidizing conditions that make the resulting graphene oxide material less conductive than pure carbon. Pristine unoxidized graphene can be achieved through exfoliation, but the process requires solvents whose residues also decrease conductivity.

The Northwestern researchers have developed a new method for mass-producing graphene that maintains its conductivity and can be carried out at room temperature using ethanol and ethyl cellulose to exfoliate graphite. This relatively clean process minimizes residues and results in a powder with a high concentration of nanometer-sized graphene flakes, which is then mixed into a solvent to create the ink.

The researchers demonstrated printing the ink in multiple layers, each 14 nanometers thick, to create precise patterns. The ink's conductivity remains virtually unchanged, even when bent to a great degree, suggesting that graphene inks could be used to create foldable electronic devices in the future.

In addition to Hersam, other authors of the paper are McCormick graduate students Ethan B. Secor and Michael L. Geier and postdoctoral researchers Pradyumna L. Prabhumirashi and Kanan Puntambekar. This work was supported by the Office of Naval Research.

Predetermined Pace Loans might be common despite their firm conditions. This financial products incorporates a reasonably a low interest rate charge and you?ll area versatile goods everywhere in the current market.

The financial possibility review relation in which banks while others creditors analyze just before granting a home loan. Usually, checks having higher LTV rates usually are seen as top of the possibilities and, for that reason, if the mortgage loan is acknowledged, your money may normally price this debtor more to help gain access to or that they must obtain home loan insurance policy. inch

Needless to say, when you?ve completed involves investigation, you will have to produce each of the necessary documents. You?ve to ensure that anyone offer legitimate personality, handle explanation, profits resistant and so forth. Some might actually question one to produce prior lender claims and your tax returns in addition. Once you have granted these kinds of docs on your lender, allow them to have sufficient occasion to be certain for the validity with the files, due to this is something the lending company has to accomplish due to the unique safety. Whenever they have confirmed the non- duplicity inside the paperwork, ones apply personal loan are going to be okay-ed and you may possibly get the level of the particular loan in the form of cheques or perhaps desire drafts.

You are due to the fact you?ll be paying an increased price pleasing regarding these types of loans than the other folks are purchasing, suppose, his or her business loans. Without a doubt, you don?t need to develop any security and even ones credit rating, nevertheless, a person might need to obvious the opposite items on the eligibility criteria. This may include the particular bank?s conclusion about whether or not a person will probably be able to pay the actual personal loan as time passes. Because rates of interest by itself are excessive, any kind of charges that you may incur on most of these programs would certainly perhaps always be higher.

6 Ways Pets Relieve Depression | World of Psychology

6 Ways Pets Relieve DepressionThe day I returned from inpatient therapy, my Lab-Chow mix cuddled up to me on the bed as I cried. She looked into my defeated gaze and licked my tears.

I was astounded that this creature was capable of the empathy that I so craved in my closest friends and relatives. It was like she could read the pathetic and sad thoughts that disabled me and wanted me to know I was lovable in the midst of my suffering.

She continues to be a supportive presence in my life, especially on the days that I grow weary of trying on ? and throwing out ? every mindful exercise and cognitive behavioral strategy? the hours where staying positive seems impossible. She gets it. I know she does.

Every week I hear tales of four-legged creatures becoming angels in times of terrifying darkness. Indeed, a substantial body of research indicates that pets improve our mental health.

How? Here are a few ways.

1. Pets offer a soothing presence.

Studies indicate that merely watching fish lowers blood pressure and muscle tension in people about to undergo oral surgery. That?s why all the aquariums in dentists? offices! Think of the behavior Darla in Disney Pixar?s ?Finding Nemo? would have exhibited without the fish tank.

Other research shows that pet owners have significantly lower blood pressure and heart rate both before and while performing stressful mental tasks ? like, say, performing a family intervention or supervising kids? homework. Finally, persons recovering from heart attacks recover more quickly and survive longer when there is a pet at home. It seems as though their mere presence is beneficial.

2. Pets offer unconditional love and acceptance.

As far as we know, pets are without opinions, critiques, and verdicts. Even if you smell like their poop, they will snuggle up next to you. In a Johns Hopkins Depression & Anxiety Bulletin, Karen Swartz, M.D. mentions a recent study where nursing home residents in St. Louis felt less lonely with some quiet time with a dog alone than a visit with both a dog and other residents.

The study enrolled 37 nursing home residents who scored high on a loneliness scale and who were interested in receiving weekly half-hour visits from dogs. Half of the residents had quiet time alone with the pooches. The other half shared the dog with other nursing home residents. Both groups said they felt less lonely after the visit, but the decrease in loneliness was much more significant among the residents that had the dogs all to themselves. In other words, at times we prefer our four-legged friends to our mouthy pals because we can divulge our innermost thoughts and not be judged.

3. Pets alter our behavior.

Here?s a typical scenario. I come through the door in the evening and I?m annoyed. At what, I don?t know. A million little snafus that happened throughout the day. I am dangerously close to taking it out on someone. However, before I can do that, my Lab-Chow walks up to me and pats me, wanting some attention. So I kneel down and pet her. She licks my face, and I smile. Voila! She altered my behavior. I am only agitated a little now and chances are much better that someone will not become a casualty of my frustrations. We calm down when we are with our dogs, cats, lizards, and pigs. We slow our breath, our speech, our minds. We don?t hit as many people or use as many four-lettered words.

4. Pets distract.

Pets are like riveting movies and books. They take us out of our heads and into another reality ? one that only involves food, water, affection, and maybe an animal butt ? for as long as we can allow. I?ve found distraction to be the only effective therapy when you?ve hit a point where there is no getting your head back. It?s tough to ruminate about how awful you feel and will feel forever when your dog is breathing in your face.

5. Pets promote touch.

The healing power of touch is undisputed. Research indicates a 45-minute massage can decrease levels of the stress hormone cortisol and optimize your immune system by building white blood cells. Hugging floods our bodies with oxytocin, a hormone that reduces stress, and lowers blood pressure and heart rates. And, according to a University of Virginia study, holding hands can reduce the stress-related activity in the hypothalamus region of the brain, part of our emotional center. The touch can actually stop certain regions of the brain from responding to threat clues. It?s not surprising, then, that stroking a dog or cat can lower blood pressure and heart rate and boost levels of serotonin and dopamine.

6. Pets make us responsible.

With pets come great responsibility, and responsibility ? according to depression research ? promotes mental health. Positive psychologists assert that we build our self-esteem by taking ownership of a task, by applying our skills to a job. When we succeed ? i.e., the pet is still alive the next day ? we reinforce to ourselves that we are capable of caring for another creature as well as ourselves. That?s why chores are so important in teaching adolescents self-mastery and independence.

Taking care of a pet also brings structure to our day. Sleeping until noon is no longer a possibility unless you want to spend an hour cleaning up the next day. Staying out all night needs some preparation and forethought.

Happening now: Selling plants to help pets via ... - West Seattle Blog

May 18, 2013 at 3:20 pm | In Gardening, How to help, West Seattle news | 5 Comments

At the time of last year?s Furry Faces Foundation plant sale, F3 leader and plant-raiser Teri Ensley?s house still had damage to fix from a fire a few months earlier. Now ? as the 2013 plant sale begins ? Teri is back in her house after rehab and repairs by Ventana Construction (WSB sponsor), work she is so proud of that she?s even incorporated Ventana?s name into the plant sale:

The shelving holding plants on the south side of Teri?s house is dubbed ?Ventana Terrace? now, signage and all. Today is the first of four days of the sale ? till 4 pm, then again tomorrow 10 am-4 pm, and the weekend of June 1-2, 3809 46th SW. It all started with more than 1,000 plants on ?Ventana Terrace? and in the front yard, including herbs, perennials, annuals, vegetables, more ? and the F3 ?Tag Your Pet? campaign is happening there; read about it all in this WSB Forums post.

(AP) ? Some lucky person walked into a Publix supermarket in suburban Florida over the past few days and bought a ticket now worth an estimated $590.5 million ? the highest Powerball jackpot in history.

But it wasn't Matthew Bogel. On Sunday, he loaded groceries into his car after shopping at the Publix. He shook his head when asked about the jackpot.

"It's crazy, isn't it?" he said. "That's so much money."

It's an amount too high for many to imagine. Compare it to the budget for the city of Zephyrhills: This year's figure is just more than $49 million. The winning Powerball jackpot is 12 times that.

Whoever has the ticket hadn't come forward as of Sunday afternoon.

"This would be the sixth Florida Powerball winner and right now, it's the sole winner of the largest ever Powerball jackpot," Florida Lottery executive Cindy O'Connell told The Associated Press. "We're delighted right now that we have the sole winner."

Publix spokeswoman Maria Brous said that there are a lot of rumors about who won, but the store doesn't know. "We're excited for the winner or winners," she said.

Florida Lottery spokesman David Bishop said Sunday afternoon that it was doubtful the winner would come forward that day. The ticket-holder can't claim the prize until Monday when the agency opens, he said.

"It never happens this quickly," Bishop said. "If they know they won, they're going to contact their attorney or an accountant first so they can get their affairs in order."

O'Connell said Florida has had more Powerball winners than any other state but did not give any indication whether anyone had stepped forward with the winning ticket in Saturday's drawing.

But plenty of people in Zephyrhills ? population 13,337 ? are wondering whether it's someone they know.

Joan Albertson drove to the Publix early Sunday morning with her camera in hand, in case the winner emerged. She said she had bought a ticket at a store across the street, and the idea of winning that much money was still something of a shock.

"Oh, there's so much good that you could do with that amount of money." Albertson said. "I don't even know where to begin."

Zephyrhills is a small city in Pasco County, about 30 miles northeast of downtown Tampa. Once a rural farming town, it's now known as a hotbed for skydiving activity, and the home to large retiree mobile home parks and Zephyrhills bottled water.

And now, one lucky lottery ticket.

"I'm getting text messages and messages from Facebook going, 'uh, did you win the lottery?'" Sandra Lewis said. "No, I didn't win, guys. Sorry."

Sara Jeltis said her parents in Michigan texted her with the news Sunday morning.

"Well, it didn't click till I came here," she said, gesturing to the half-dozen TV live trucks humming in the Publix parking lot. "And I'm like, wow I can't believe it, it's shocking! Out of the whole country, this Publix, in little Zephyrhills would be the winner."

With four out of every five possible combinations of Powerball numbers in play, lottery executives said Saturday that someone was almost certain to win the game's highest jackpot, a windfall of hundreds of millions of dollars ? and that's after taxes.

The winning numbers were 10, 13, 14, 22 and 52, with a Powerball of 11.

Estimates had earlier put the jackpot at around $600 million. But Powerball's online site said Sunday that the jackpot had reached an estimated $590.5 million.

The world's largest jackpot was a $656 million Mega Millions jackpot in March 2012.

Terry Rich, CEO of the Iowa Lottery, initially confirmed that one Florida winning ticket had been sold. He told AP that following the Florida winner, the Powerball grand prize was being reset at an estimated jackpot of $40 million, or about $25.1 million cash value.

The chances of winning the prize were astronomically low: 1 in 175.2 million. That's how many different ways you can combine the numbers when you play. But lottery officials estimated that about 80 percent of those possible combinations had been purchased recently.

While the odds are low for any one individual or individuals, O'Connell said, the chance that one hits paydirt is what makes Powerball exciting.

"There is just the chance that you will have the opportunity, and Florida is a huge Powerball state," O'Connell said. "We have had more winners than any other state that participates in Powerball."

The longshot odds didn't deter people across Powerball-playing states ? 43 plus Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands ? from lining up at gas stations and convenience stores Saturday.

Clyde Barrow, a public policy professor at the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth, specializes in the gaming industry. He said one of the key factors behind the ticket-buying frenzy is the size of the jackpot ? people are interested in the easy investment.

"Even though the odds are very low, the investment is very small," he said. "Two dollars gets you a chance."

Lewis, who went to the Publix on Sunday to buy water, said she didn't play ? and she isn't upset about it.

"Life goes on," she said, shrugging. "I'm good."

Noah Baumbach on ?Frances Ha': Why it took 40 takes to make a little story feel epic

By Steve Pond

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Noah Baumbach's "Frances Ha" seemingly came out of nowhere to charm viewers at Telluride and Toronto last fall.

The Brooklyn-born director, whose previous films include "Kicking and Screaming," "The Squid and the Whale" and "Margot at the Wedding," made the made the movie quietly, co-writing it with his "Greenberg" leading lady Greta Gerwig and filming it in luminous black and white on the streets and in the subways and apartments of New York City.

The film follows Gerwig's title character, a 27-year-old aspiring dancer who's never quite gotten her life together; by turns funny, sad, touching and cringe-inducing, it approaches the mess that Frances has made with what TheWrap's Alonso Duralde described as "an optimism and empathy ? that feels genuine and earned."

TheWrap spoke to Baumbach about the Woody Allen connection, shooting up to 40 takes for each scene and the leap of faith needed on the part of financiers.

Warning: His final answer contains spoilers.

You approached Greta Gerwig about making another film together after finishing "Greenberg," but at that point how much of an idea did you have for this film?

I really just had a sense of a movie - doing something in New York that Greta would be the center of and maybe centering on being that age. I didn't really know much beyond that. But working with her on "Greenberg," I was struck by how hilarious she is, so I also had the sense that it could be funny.

So we just started emailing each other back and forth with pretty broad thoughts. They were things like, "Do you pay the surcharge at an ATM if you're in a rush and you're broke, instead of walking to a cheaper ATM?" Things like that that did make it into the movie, and then many things that didn't make it into the movie.

Did you decide to shoot in black and white early on?

That was one of my first ideas. I felt like the black and white would both contrast and support what was essentially a very modern story and a very contemporary character.

And also, there was something about the character as she developed where all my visual ideas started going toward a more classical mode of shooting. I wanted it to feel kind of elegant and beautiful and epic at times, and the black and white certainly was part of that, and later the music. There was something about the intimacy of the story that I felt should be told in a bigger, bolder way.

When you make the decision to make a movie in black and white in New York City, do you always feel the shadow of Woody Allen and his "Manhattan" cinematographer Gordon Willis? Well, of course we went right to that movie, to "Manhattan." And "Broadway Danny Rose." I felt like what we were doing was maybe in the tradition of it, but it was so much our story. It wasn't so much of a shadow so much as it was something to get inspiration from, as a kind of bar you want to try to hit.

You famously shot 30, 40 takes or more of many of the scenes in this film. What do you get out of a scene when you do it that many times?

Well, I'm often interested in how much story you can tell with one shot. And so sometimes I tend to shoot many pages in one shot, without a cutting point. If the scene were shot in a more traditional way, you'd ultimately be doing almost as many takes, because you'd be shooting a master and then medium close, then close ... So in some ways you'd be close to 40 takes anyway.

What we're trying to do, often, is to get many pages to work in one shot. Maybe that's where perfectionism comes into play. It's sometimes getting the camera move right or changing our minds in the middle and deciding to block it differently. Sometimes two actors are on different trajectories within a scene, and you need to get them both at the same place at the same time.

And sometimes it's me, and I'm having trouble figuring it out.

If you're shooting traditionally, using coverage, you can piece a scene together using the best lines from many different takes. But if you're shooting the whole thing in one shot, you have to hope that one take has everything you want. Exactly. My friend Brian DePalma says he thinks coverage is a bad word. He says anybody can shoot a scene with coverage. I do think it's more interesting to see how shots can evolve.

And it doesn't need to be with wild camera moves or anything. It can just be with blocking, having an actor start in the background and walk to the foreground as the scene develops. I was thinking in some cases of the way Woody Allen blocks scenes, or how Ernest Lubitsch would block a scene.

A black-and-white movie with a script that was kept under wraps - this must have been a leap of faith on the part of the financiers.

It was a major leap of faith. I told them I was going to be black and white, but I did tell them that it wasn't going to be experimental. I said it would be a movie that would stand with anything else I'd made. And they were really cool about it.

Not to give anything away, but there's something quite refreshing about an ending that feels like a small triumph, even though it's very much not what this character has spent the entire movie working toward and dreaming about.

Right. It was clear to me early on that the ending should be hopeful, that she should be rewarded for her struggles. At a Q&A recently, somebody said, "Did you ever think of not giving it such a happy ending?" And I think it was Greta who said the same thing you were just pointing out. She said, "It is a happy ending - but if you really kind look at it, she takes a desk job and gets a crummy little apartment. It's hardly like she's marrying a prince."

We really wanted to create a context where those moves seemed big. Heroic, in a way. It was a movie where acknowledging that you're not going to get what you fantasized about can be a very positive thing. That's what growth is, you know?

As Frances, the dithering, knockabout, perpetually put-upon heroine of Noah Baumbach?s ?Frances Ha,? Gerwig is worth watching even when her scenes fall flat. Frances is a struggling dancer who spends much of the movie moving in and out of digs in Brooklyn and Manhattan and Westchester. She?s always on the go and yet never quite going anywhere. Even when she takes a whirlwind sojourn to Paris, she might as well be slumming in Soho.

Baumbach, who also co-wrote the script with Gerwig (his romantic partner), has a loose improvisatory feel for funky comedy. In the scenes with Frances?s best friend, Sophie (Mickey Sumner), the film seems especially true to the nature of female friendships. It?s a skimpy, overextended riff, but some of the seemingly tossed-off moments are lovely. Grade: B (Rated R for sexual references and language.)

String of car bombs kill more than 35 across Iraq

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Bomb attacks in Shi'ite areas of Baghdad and in northern Iraq killed more than 30 people on Wednesday, following weeks of violence by Sunni Islamist insurgents determined to spark sectarian confrontation.

Tensions between minority Sunni Muslims and the Shi'ites who now lead Iraq are at their highest since U.S. troops pulled out in 2011, with relations coming under more pressure by the day from the largely sectarian conflict in neighboring Syria.

A string of car bombings hit Shi'ite neighborhoods across the Iraqi capital Baghdad on Wednesday evening, including one outside a cafe, killing at least 18 people, police said.

Earlier, 10 people were killed when two car bombs exploded near government buildings in the ethnically mixed oil city of Kirkuk.

"There were two bodies on the ground outside the building, people were shouting and it was a mess everywhere," said Rawaa Rahman, a government employee in Kirkuk who was wounded in the hand.

A suicide bomber on a motorcycle also blew himself up near a police patrol in northern Baghdad, killing at least two officers, while a roadside bomb killed a policeman in a town near Mosul, 390 km (240 miles) to the north, police and medical sources said.

Relations between Iraq's Shi'ite, Sunni and ethnic Kurdish communities have come under growing strain since the last American troops left in December 2011.

The coalition government, split among Shi'ite, Sunni and Kurdish political blocs, is hobbled by disagreements about how to share power.

But the conflict in neighboring Syria, where mostly Sunni rebels are trying to oust President Bashar al-Assad, has also put pressure on Iraq's delicate intercommunal balance.

Although violence is well below the height of sectarian slaughter in 2006-7, when tens of thousands were killed, Sunni Islamist insurgents now carry out attacks almost daily to try to undermine the Shi'ite-led government.

Al Qaeda's local wing, Islamic State of Iraq, and other Sunni insurgents are trying to use Syria's war to gain legitimacy and tap into frustrations among Iraqi Sunnis, hoping to regain ground they lost during their long battle with American troops.

(AP) ? The same jury that convicted Jodi Arias of first-degree murder last week took less than three hours Wednesday to determine that the former waitress is eligible for the death penalty in the killing of her one-time lover.

The swift verdict sets the stage for the final phase of the trial to determine whether the 32-year-old Arias should be sentenced to life in prison or the death penalty for the 2008 murder of Travis Alexander in his suburban Phoenix home.

Prosecutors will call Alexander's family and other witnesses in an effort to convince the panel Arias should face the ultimate punishment. Arias' defense lawyers will have her family members testify, and likely others who have known her over the years, in an attempt to gain sympathy from jurors to save her life. It's not yet known if Arias will testify.

Arias showed no emotion Wednesday after the jury returned a decision that was widely expected given the violent nature of the killing. She slashed Alexander's throat, stabbed him in the heart and shot him in the forehead after a day of sex at his home in June 2008. The victim suffered a total of nearly 30 knife wounds in what prosecutors described as an attack fueled by jealous rage after Alexander wanted to end his affair with Arias and prepared to take a trip to Mexico with another woman.

The jury simply had to determine the killing was committed in an especially cruel and heinous manner to complete the "aggravation phase" of the trial and move on to the penalty portion. The panel got the case around noon, took a lunch break and returned with the verdict around 3 p.m.

Alexander's family members sobbed in the front row as prosecutor Juan Martinez took the jury through the killing one more time earlier in the day. He described how blood gushed from Alexander's chest, hands and neck as the 30-year-old motivational speaker and businessman stood at the sink in his master bathroom and looked into the mirror with Arias behind him, a knife in her hand.

"The last thing he saw before he lapsed into unconsciousness ... was that blade coming to his throat," Martinez said. "And the last thing he felt before he left this earth was pain."

Wednesday's proceedings played out quickly, with only one prosecution witness and none for the defense. The most dramatic moments occurred when Martinez displayed photos of Alexander's corpse and the bloody crime scene for the jury, then paused in silence for two minutes to describe how long he said it took for Alexander to die at Arias' hands.

Arias, wearing a silky, cream-colored blouse, appeared to fight back tears most of the morning, but didn't seem fazed by the verdict. Afterward she chatted with her attorneys. Arias spent the weekend on suicide watch before being transferred back to an all-female jail where she will remain until sentencing.

Arias' attorneys didn't put on much of a case during the aggravation phase, offering no witnesses and giving brief opening statements and closing arguments. They said Alexander would have had so much adrenaline rushing through his body that he might not have felt much pain.

The only witness was the medical examiner who performed the autopsy and explained to jurors how Alexander did not die calmly and fought for his life as evidenced by the numerous defensive wounds on his body.

Minutes after her first-degree murder conviction last Wednesday, Arias granted an interview to Fox affiliate KSAZ, only adding to the circus-like environment surrounding the trial that has become a cable TV sensation with its graphic tales of sex, lies and violence.

"Longevity runs in my family, and I don't want to spend the rest of my natural life in one place," a tearful Arias said. "I believe death is the ultimate freedom, and I'd rather have my freedom as soon as I can get it."

However, Arias cannot choose the death penalty. It's up to the jury to recommend a sentence.

Arias acknowledged killing Alexander but said it was self-defense. She initially denied any involvement, even proclaiming to a detective while being interrogated in 2008: "I'm not guilty. I didn't hurt Travis. If I hurt Travis, I would beg for the death penalty."

She later blamed the attack on masked intruders. Two years after her arrest, she settled on self-defense.
