ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) -
A 12-year-old boy is going above and beyond to help other kids he doesn't even know. With a steady hand and caring heart, Curtis Chavez explains how his summer project works.
?
"You wrap it around, grab it again, go all the way through and go through the next opening," he said as he crochets a line in his latest home-made cap.The soon to be seventh-grade student plans to make 50 hats by October. Chavez will donate them to children fighting cancer at the University of New Mexico Hospital.
While most kids spend their summers at camp or glued to the television, he said his new hobby is much more rewarding.
?
"It's easier doing a video game, but this is more fun. It clams you down and your eyes don't hurt," Chavez said.Chavez got the idea while visiting the hospital with his mother. His aunt taught him how to crochet at the beginning of the summer and he's been hooked ever since.
It's an idea that's catching on fast.
?
A friend helped him set up a Facebook page called "Hats for Hope" and now there are families making blankets, donating yarn and even crocheting hats of their own.Chavez's mom explained she's amazed by her son's impact.
?
"He's such a giving person and has such a big heart," said Jessica Chavez. "We're hoping people will see how great he is and want to help out as well. You can always help children."
