Samsung, Android Remain On Top In U.S. Mobile, Apple Supplants LG As No.2 With 53% Smartphone Penetration: comScore

android-eats-appleBy one account Apple is having a very strong quarter in the U.S. in smartphone sales on the strength of the iPhone 5, but overall, Android and specifically Samsung are continuing to dominate the market. According to figures out today from comScore, there are 123.3 million people in the U.S. using smartphones as of November 2012, and Android represents 53.7 of them. Among all mobile users — smartphone and otherwise — 26.9% of them are using Samsung devices. The figures, the result of a survey of some 30,000 consumers as part of comScores ongoing MobiLens research, found that Apple’s iPhones account for 35% of all smartphone subscribers, and that its overall mobile share is now at 26.9%. That was enough to put Apple ahead of LG as the country’s number-two mobile brand, with LG now at 17.5%, and Motorola and HTC continuing to round out the top-five, but with smaller market shares than three months before. The survey, of course, does not include holiday shopping figures, so it will be interesting to see whether Apple inches closer to Samsung, or even surpasses it, as a result of that period. According to figures from Kantar Worldpanel, Apple’s iPhone, in the 12 weeks that ended November 25, reached its highest-ever sales share in the U.S. market at 53.3%. Top Mobile OEMs 3 Month Avg. They now stand at 53%, and just as before the rankings continue to demonstrate that it’s an Android/iOS game: RIM, Microsoft and Symbian all lost market share. Top Smartphone Platforms 3 Month Avg. Cold weather, hot fights: The top five bouts of January

Happy January, Cagereaders. It's a new year, which means we have a fresh slate of fights to discuss, dissect, predict and then finally enjoy. Here are Cagewriter's top five. Which ones are you most excited about? Speak up in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.

Michael Chandler vs. Rick Hawn on Jan. 17: Bellator's move to Spike TV is starting with a bang. Lightweight champion Chandler will defend his belt for the first time (his bout with Akihiro Gono was a non-title bout.) He'll have to face Hawn, an Olympian in judo who won his last three fights with two knockouts and a decision.

Pat Curran vs. Patricio Freire on Jan. 17: On the same night, Curran will put his featherweight title against Freire, a frightening striker who has been waiting for Curran since May.

Vitor Belfort vs. Michael Bisping on January 19: The UFC on FX card will be headlined by a fight that could decide Anderson Silva's next challenger. Even without title implications hanging over it, Belfort taking on Bisping in Brazil is just a fun fight.

Donald Cerrone vs. Anthony Pettis on January 26: Fighters don't have to dislike each other for a good fight to happen, but it does make it a whole lot of fun. Pettis and Cerrone have been jawing at each other for months, and they finally get to settle their score at the UFC's next Fox card. Bonus: They're both thrilling strikers who seem incapable of boring fights.

Demetrious Johnson vs. John Dodson on January 26: For the main event of UFC on Fox 6, Johnson will get his first chance to defend the UFC's flyweight belt. It will be speed vs. speed in the cage, which is both fun and exhausting to watch.

Jury selection begins in US terror finance case | WSLS 10

MIAMI (AP) Jury selection began Wednesday in the U.S. for the trial of an elderly Muslim cleric and a son accused of funneling about $50,000 to the Pakistani Taliban terror group.

Hafiz and Izhar Khan of Miami are charged with providing material support to terrorists. Each count carries a maximum prison sentence of 15 years.

The men say the money they sent overseas was for innocent purposes. They have pleaded not guilty.

The Pakistani Taliban is linked to al-Qaida and has played roles in several attacks against the U.S., including a December 2009 suicide bombing at a military base in Khost, Afghanistan, that killed seven U.S. citizens, prosecutors said.

Prosecutors also said Hafiz Khan founded a religious school in Pakistan that was used by the Taliban to train and indoctrinate children in fighting Americans. The Pakistani army shut down the school in 2009.

Defense attorneys say the money wired to Pakistan was for family members, not to buy weapons for terrorists, and that the school was not a terrorist training center.

ESPN's Hannah Storm returns to air after grill accident

NEW YORK (AP) ? ESPN anchor Hannah Storm returns to the air New Year's Day, exactly three weeks after she was seriously burned in a propane gas grill accident at her home.

Storm suffered second-degree burns on her chest and hands, and first-degree burns to her face and neck. She lost her eyebrows and eyelashes, and roughly half her hair.

Storm will host ABC's telecast of the 2013 Rose Parade on Tuesday. Her left hand will be bandaged and she said viewers might notice a difference in her hair texture where extensions have been added.

"I'm a little nervous about things I used to take for granted," she said by phone this weekend from Pasadena, Calif. "Little things like putting on makeup and even turning pages on my script."

The award-winning sportscaster and producer was preparing dinner outside her home in Connecticut on the night of Dec. 11 when she noticed the flame on the grill had gone out. She turned off the gas and when she reignited it "there was an explosion and a wall of fire came at me."

"It was like you see in a movie, it happened in a split-second," she said. "A neighbor said he thought a tree had fallen through the roof, it was that loud. It blew the doors off the grill."

With her left hand, she tore off her burning shirt. She tried to use another part of her shirt to extinguish the flames that engulfed her head and chest, while yelling for help. Her 15-year-old daughter, Hannah, called 911 and a computer technician who was working in the house grabbed some ice as Storm tried to cool the burns.

Soon, police and rescue teams arrived at the house. Storm's husband, NBC sportscaster Dan Hicks, also had returned home with another of the couple's three daughters. As her mother was being treated, the younger Hannah calmly said something that, days later, her mom could laugh about.

"OK, Mommy, I'm going to do my homework now," she said.

Storm was taken by ambulance to the Trauma and Burn Center at Westchester Medical Center and was treated for 24 hours.

"I didn't see my face until the next day and you wonder how it's going to look," she said. "I was pretty shocked. But my overarching thought was I've covered events with military members who have been through a lot worse than me, and they've come through. I kept thinking, 'I can do this. I'm fortunate.'"

Other than going to Christmas Eve Mass, Storm hadn't been outside until her trip to California. ESPN reworked its anchor schedule while she was recovering, and NBC and the Golf Channel rearranged their staffing while Hicks attended to his wife.

Storm is set to host her fifth Rose Parade, with some changes. She's left-handed, and taking notes is almost impossible. Dressing and showering are challenges, too.

Storm said that long before her accident, she'd been inspired by Iraq War veteran, actor and "Dancing With the Stars" winner J.R. Martinez, the grand marshal at last year's parade. He was severely burned in a land mine accident while serving overseas.

One attraction of this year's parade that she was eager to see ? the Nurses' Float, and she hoped to use that moment on air to thank everyone who had taken care of her.

Storm wants to anchor "SportsCenter" in Bristol, Conn., next Sunday. After that, the Notre Dame alum is ready to go in person to watch the No. 1 Irish play Alabama in the national championship game at Miami. She said the school reached out after hearing about her injuries and had been very supportive.

"More than anything, I feel gratitude," she said. "Something like this really makes you appreciate everything you have, even the chance to wake up on New Year's Day and do your job."

(AP) ? A survivor of a deadly bus crash in Eastern Oregon says she and several other passengers were ejected after the tour bus smashed through a guardrail and plummeted down an embankment

Twenty-two-year-old Berlyn Sanderson of Canada says windows on the bus broke as it careened down the embankment, and she and a number of others were thrown out.

She says the bus began skidding on ice before it hit the guardrail on Interstate 84 and plummeted 100 feet down an embankment.

Sunday's crash killed nine people and sent more than 30 others to hospitals.

It occurred on a section of I-84 that is notorious for its icy conditions during the winter.

The bus was returning to British Columbia from a trip to Las Vegas. Some of the passengers were exchange students from South Korea.
