Dental Clinic: Taking Care Of Your Family's Oral Health

Having a family doctor is a common set-up for families who have certain health problems or people who are much concerned with their family?s health and well-being. For dental care, having a family dentist provides benefits for continuous well-being of each family member. Just like a family doctor, a family dentist would know how to care for your family?s oral health and would have a background of everyone?s dental condition-from parents to kids.

To continuously care for your family?s oral health, it is important to visit a dental clinic for regular check ups at least twice a year. Common dental treatment procedures include deep cleaning. Aside from getting rid of plaque, deep cleaning helps prevent tooth decay and maintain healthy gums. Other preventive dental procedures, such as breath treatment, infection control and fluoride treatment, could be done depending on the patient?s dental needs and condition.

Furthermore, a family dentist can easily provide solutions to your children?s dental problems. If you have your own family dentist, you don?t have to look for a random dentist for an appointment when your kids or any other family member need to have tooth extraction, dental pasta, or gum treatment. With a family dentist, you can have more confidence that the dental procedure will go well since the dentist already knows the background of your kids? dental condition.

You can actually make your dental visits as a family affair, done every six months. Likewise, you kids will become familiar with their dentist and as they get older, they won?t be scared of having their mouth checked and treated. The best dentist knows how to treat your whole family; if a kid is scared of tooth extraction, they would know what to say and do to ease the kid?s fear.

When looking for a dentist for your whole family, you need to take into account some considerations. These include the skills and personality of the dentist. A good family dentist is smart and friendly. Because not all patients can understand difficult medical or technical terms, the dentist should be able to explain things in layman?s terms when dealing with their clients. Also, the dentist you should choose must be able to give necessary advice on proper dental care and tips for maintaining good oral hygiene. Lastly, make sure that your dentist keeps a tidy, organised and client-friendly dental clinic.

E-voting could affect accuracy of vote counts in four states

Touch-screen electronic voting machines in at least four states pose a risk to the integrity of the 2012 presidential election, according to a Monitor analysis.

In four key battleground states ? Pennsylvania, Virginia, Florida, and Colorado ? glitches in e-voting machines could produce incorrect or incomplete tallies that would be difficult to detect and all but impossible to correct because the machines have no paper record for officials to go back and check.

While many state officials laud the accuracy of e-voting machines, mechanical and software failures are not a new problem. What makes the risk more serious this year is that polls project a close election, and e-voting problems in any of the four states in question could affect who wins the presidency.

[RECOMMENDED: 3 views on whether US states should require voter ID]

"No matter how unlikely it seems now, there's a chance that this election will be so close that it could be flipped by a single voting machine problem in a single place in any one of those states," says Edward Felten, a professor at Princeton University in New Jersey who has analyzed e-voting machine weaknesses. "To avoid that, it's key to have a record of what the voter saw ? and that means having a paper ballot or other paper record."

Paper verification of votes has proved to be a vital backstop to ensure that voting-machine software is not corrupt and that programming errors did not affect the accuracy of electronic vote tallies. Voting machines have at times "lost" thousands of votes or even "flipped" votes from one candidate to another, and total breakdowns are not unheard of.

For example:

  • In 2006, some 18,000 votes were electronically "lost" by e-vote systems in a single Florida congressional race with no paper backup or ballots available to review.
  • In May 2011, voters in Pennsylvania?s Venango County complained that paperless electronic touch-screen machines were "flipping their choices from one party to another," according to a report by Verified Voting, a nonprofit group in Carlsbad, Calif., that tracks voting machine use nationwide. After an inconclusive audit of election results, the county simply decided to use paper ballots counted by optical scanners in future elections.
  • In March, an e-voting system in Florida?s Palm Beach County experienced a "synchronization? problem in a municipal election. The election software attributed votes to the wrong contest and the wrong candidates won. Thankfully, paper ballots existed. After a court-ordered recount, results were changed and two losing candidates were declared winners.

More than 1,800 voting machine problems were reported to election protection hotlines during the 2008 general election, according to Verified Voting. Such election failures mattered far less in 2008 because Barack Obama won by a landslide. But this year, the loser might be likely to demand a recount if the winning margin is small. In states that still use Direct Recording Equipment (DRE) ? touch-screen voting equipment that lacks any paper verification ? that could be a problem.

"Without a paper trail there's no opportunity to check, so then you just have to rely on faith that the software is functioning properly and capturing votes properly," says Pamela Smith, president of Verified Voting. "Maybe the machine is working OK right now. But if there is a bug or glitch, there's nothing to go back to."

After the controversy over "hanging chads" in Florida in the 2000 election, touch-screen e-voting machines proliferated nationwide as the Help America Vote Act of 2002 helped states pay for new equipment. Most states have since replaced e-systems that lack paper verification with paper ballots counted by optical scanners. While scanners can also fail, the paper ballots are there to be recounted.

But 17 states still use paperless DREs, according to Verified Voting. Among those, four are expected to see election results close enough to potentially demand a recount.

"Most of the country has gone to some sort of paper-based optical or electronic system," says Peter Lichtenheld, vice president of operations for Austin-based Hart InterCivic, one of four major voting machine companies in the US. "In counties that have decided to stay with older direct response equipment [DREs], they've put in people and procedures to make them more secure."

For example, most states now run preelection software tests on the machines to verify that they are counting correctly. The machines are "sealed" against tampering and, increasingly, they are monitored by surveillance cameras even in off-use periods. Memory cards in the machines should retain votes, even in a power failure, but have not always done so.

To critics, however, reliance on electronic methods alone as a backup means that the machines are, in essence, checking themselves. Only a paper document checked by the voter ensures that the vote was recorded correctly and is immune to system failures or even cyberattack.

  • In Pennsylvania, 50 of 68 counties have paperless equipment as their standard voting system, Verified Voting data show. Those machines serve some 7 million of about 8.5 million registered voters statewide.
  • In Virginia, 127 of 135 counties use paperless DREs, accounting for 3.7 million of the state?s 5 million registered voters, according to Verified Voting.
  • Colorado is shifting to mail-in paper ballots, but the transition isn't complete. Jefferson County, the state?s fourth most populous, is using paperless DREs as well as mailed ballots. So many of its 320,000-plus "active" registered voters will vote on the machines ? more than enough to tip a tight race, says Ms. Smith of Verified Voting.
  • In Florida, all counties are required by law to have paper backups for their voting machines by 2014. Even so, a small but potentially significant number of disabled voters statewide still will use paperless touch-screen machines this year. Although only a few thousand votes may be cast on those "accessibility" machines, it could still be enough to throw the race if the state's vote tally were to end up as close as it was in the 2000 presidential election, when George W. Bush controversially won by 537 votes.

State officials stand by the machines.

"These DREs have been one of the more reliable pieces of equipment we've had," says Donald Palmer, secretary of Virginia's Board of Elections, the state's most senior election official. "We haven't had any major problems with them."

In fact, Colorado?s Jefferson County recently had to conduct a recount in a congressional race, in which votes cast on paperless DREs were included. Significantly, both candidates accepted the result although there was no paper to confirm that the machines had recorded the votes correctly.

"We think we have the right processes in place to make sure everyone is able to vote and that their votes count," says Andrew Cole, a spokesman for the Colorado Secretary of State's office.

Still, Princeton?s Professor Felten has put all four states on his top 10 states ?at risk? of an e-voting meltdown. Among the factors going into the the list is the effectiveness of a state?s vote-audit laws.

California, for example, is lauded because its post-election audits draw statistical comparison between paper totals and voting machine tallies to ensure the machines are accurate. In contrast, Virginia has no post-election audit and limited provisions for a recount in state law in case machine vote-count problems are detected. Similarly, Florida state laws are such that a recount may not be permitted even if a machine is known to have malfunctioned.

"Florida's post-election audit law is absolutely atrocious and does not afford the voters any certainty that their votes have been accurately counted," says Ion Sancho, supervisor of elections in Florida?s Leon County. "Because our laws only allow erroneous totals to be corrected on the basis of fraud, a machine could break down, but if there's no fraud, our laws would still not allow us to correct those erroneous totals."

The small number of voters who will use paperless DREs in the state limit the chances of an e-voting meltdown there, he acknowledges. But it is a concern. He notes that the blatant mistake made by e-voting machines in Palm Beach might have never been corrected had that been a statewide election, since there was no obvious fraud. "State law doesn't require it," he says.

"I'm hopeful," he adds, "that we can get through to 2014 without an election disaster like 2000 and finally get rid of all these [paperless] machines once and for all."

The Ceremony of Original Innocence ? 12 Foundation Circuits ...

As a result of the genetic modification of the Human DNA, almost all of our foundation circuits are in a state of disconnection, creating a distorted sense of self that has led to fear, shame, guilt and disease.

The disruption of the bio-circuitry relating to our primal resonant relationships with our mothers and fathers affects our ability to engage unconditionally in relationships. However, it is no longer necessary or ultimately effective to engage in lengthy post-mortems of childhood, casting ourselves into the trauma-vortex of past tragedies and injustices, reinforcing identities anchored in disempowering scenarios. By reconnecting the vital circuits that relate to conception, gestation, birth and childhood, healing is integrated on the DNA level.

The Ceremony of Original Innocence takes us back to our first choice, prior to our first breath, reminding us of our true identity ? creators rather than victims.

The key to this shift in perception is forgiveness, the bedrock of the shamanic journey. To embrace forgiveness is to embody the living mandala of love, upon which is based the fundamental Human ethic, acknowledging your ?response-ability? within the interconnectedness of all creation.

Although it is possible to be born with the Water Circuits connected they are almost always disrupted by guilt, regret and anger. Reconnecting these circuits clears these negative emotions, liberating relationships from destructive patterns.

The reconnection of the Thymus Circuit activates the T-cells of the immune system. This has a powerful effect on health.

With the reconnection of the Air Circuits, the pineal-hypothalamus-pituitary complex is revitalised, as the pineal is now enabled to receive the full spectrum of the geometric language of light.

(AP) ? Three-time Tour de France winner Greg LeMond has urged the leaders of cycling's governing body to resign in the wake of the Lance Armstrong doping affair, calling them "the corrupt part of the sport."

LeMond posted an open letter on his Facebook page Wednesday night that asked those who care about cycling to join him in telling International Cycling Union President Pat McQuaid and honorary president Hein Verbruggen to step down.

LeMond's letter came after the UCI stripped Armstrong of his seven Tour de France titles and banned him for life on Monday for his involvement in what a U.S. Anti-Doping Agency report described as a massive doping program.

Verbruggen led world cycling from 1991-2005, the era when Armstrong won his titles. He still sits on the UCI management board and is perceived in the sport as a mentor to McQuaid, who succeeded him.

LeMond, the Tour winner in 1986, '89 and '90, said the problem for cycling is not drugs but corruption.

The only American remaining on the 99-year Tour list of champions told McQuaid: "Pat in my opinion you and Hein are the corrupt part of the sport."

McQuaid, an Irishman whose second term as UCI president expires in September 2013, said Monday he had no intention of resigning over the systematic drug scandals that have ruined the sport's credibility.

Lemond maintains the problems aren't with the UCI, but with the group's leadership.

"I believe that there are many, maybe most that work at the UCI that are dedicated to cycling," he said. "They do it out of the love of the sport, but you and your buddy Hein have destroyed the sport.

"You know dam well what has been going on in cycling, and if you want to deny it, then even more reasons why those who love cycling need to demand that you resign. ... The problem for sport is not drugs but corruption. You are the epitome of the word corruption."

The UCI and its leaders have reacted to previous corruption accusations by filing defamation suits against Floyd Landis, who was stripped of the 2006 Tour title for doping and was a key witness in the USADA case, and Paul Kimmage, an Irish journalist and Tour rider in LeMond's era.

McQuaid has refused to back down from suing Kimmage over accusations that cycling's leaders protected Armstrong. The case is scheduled to be heard in Vevey, Switzerland, on Dec. 12.

"This is about a journalist who accused me, and my predecessor and the UCI of being corrupt. It's a straightforward defamation case," McQuaid said Monday at a news conference called to confirm sanctions against Armstrong.

McQuaid, Verbruggen and the UCI announced this month they had won a similar defamation case against Landis ? and damages of 10,000 Swiss francs ($10,667) each ? after the former Armstrong teammate made similar allegations. Landis was not served with papers in the case and it is unclear if the judgment carries any weight outside Switzerland.

LeMond is backing Kimmage's legal battle, which has become a lightning rod for cycling fans' anger at how the sport's image is being shattered. A defense fund created by two cycling news websites has raised more than $73,000 to pay Kimmage's legal fees.

"I would encourage anyone that loves cycling to donate and support Paul in his fight against Pat and Hein and the UCI," LeMond wrote. "I donated money for Paul's defense, and I am willing to donate a lot more, but I would like to use it to lobby for dramatic change in cycling.

"The sport does not need Pat McQuaid or Hein Verbruggen."

Labeling a Life of Work and Family

It seems I?ve forgotten how to blog?and maybe dial the phone, too. ?Thank goodness for Facebook where I can at least post an occasional status update or photo as a means of reassuring my mother (all the way down in Texas) that, yes, we?re still here and still doing fine.

I had realized toward the end of September that I didn?t have many new website clients coming up and so, for the first time in my webdesign ?career? I actually decided to do a little advertising. ?You may have seen this cute little ad floating around cyberspace:

I thought the best way to end the year with a bang would be to do a bunch of smaller, quick websites which are guaranteed to end before Peach decides to make his/her appearance in early January. ?So, this month I?m trying like mad to clear a small backlog of old contracts (which have only been waiting and waiting and waiting ?for client content submissions) and I?m finishing up a giant website project for our La Leche League area: Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Vermont. ?Then, beginning November 1st I?ll be building one website a week through mid-December. ?The response to my first advertising attempt was better than I could have imagined (especially because it didn?t cost me anything!); I received a referral from a past client, a new client here on Nantucket, and two new clients in Austin, Texas who saw my ad through the wonders of viral marketing ? all thanks to Facebook. ?I?m super excited about each of these websites (and grateful for the wonders of ?social media!), even if they mean I?ve been spending ?? and will keep spending ? nearly every waking, non-parenting moment glued to either Photoshop or WordPress.

We?re nearing the end of the year and as we get ever closer to Peach?s birth, I often find myself marveling at how this little business venture has worked out. ?Never would I have guessed that I would be busy enough to actually say I?m taking a maternity leave. ?And yet, here I am, working seven days per week, while Nora?s at school, while she?s napping, and long after she?s jammied up and tucked snugly into bed. ?Some days and nights I manage to squeeze in six, seven, or eight hours of work, while still leaving plenty of time for playground exploration, img_5666 play dates with friends, img_5613 2012_105 ?shopping trips unhurried enough to allow for taking fun pictures img_5632 ?and inspecting stacked pumpkin people, img_5634 ? img_5636 ?lots of cooking together, 2012_104 ?and even an occasional candle-lit bubble bath. 2012_103 (Even if it was at two a.m., in lieu of blogging, and my tiny bathtub won?t let the water cover my ever expanding belly, it still felt amazingly luxurious.)

There was a post recently on Motherlode?written by a father who listed the normal parenting/household things he does in addition to working and asked why he isn?t given the title of ?working dad? when women in similar roles are labeled as ?working mothers.? ?I understood the point he was trying to convey about equality in parenting, though I think that term isn?t in common use because his situation is not unique. ?The reason our society doesn?t need it is because it is generally assumed most dads work outside of the home. The expectation is that if you have children and you are a man, you are a ?working dad? ? unless of course you?re a ?SAH dad,? a ?single dad? or a ?deadbeat dad,? in which case the qualifier is added to explain a unique situation. I expect that when the term ?working mother? came into use is was because that was still a unique situation. ?While reading that Motherlode post and pondering my own situation, I was struck by just how pointless all of these titles and labels are. ?As they do very little to?truly?explain or identify how any given family works. ?Ann Romney?s stay-at-home mom experience, for example, is dramatically different from that of the average low-income SAHM. ?Or, as another example of the futility of such labels, I realized I still have no idea what to call myself or how to sum up my combined business/parenting identity to a stranger.

Stay-at-home mom just doesn?t seem right anymore, not when I?m working on websites until three a.m. and running out for client meetings before Chris leaves for work in the morning, despite that fact that I did quit my job two and a half years ago to be a stay-at-home mom and despite that I do all of the things a mother with no outside childcare does. ?But I also work, too; in all?technicality, I might have never actually been a SAHM, since I was babysitting full-time from almost day one of my SAH life. ?On the other hand, I?m not sure I would ever call myself a ?working mom.? ?Putting aside all considerations of political correctness and whether or not such a term suggests that SAHMs don?t do work, to me that term generally implies employment outside of the home, reporting to someone other than one?s self and, more often than not, full-time employment. To me, it implies time away from one?s kids. ?Even ?work-at-home mom? makes me think of a situation with an outside employer and a significant time commitment each week, although it might best describe my situation. ?Technically, I suppose, I?m a ?small business owner? since I have two registered businesses (one of which I am currently doing absolutely nothing with). ?But again, the very part-time-ness of my situation isn?t reflected in that label. ?Nora?s schedule, care and play always takes precedence over my work, and though I do need to make a certain amount of money to supplement Chris?s income, it?s small and she is always first priority (not that I can say the same for housework!). ? And I wonder what role is played the amount of income, time spent working, or type of work being done. ?I work less now than I did when I was babysitting, but I make significantly more money per hour and am doing things that cannot be doubly labeled as ?work? to care for my child.

In my Motherlode comment, I advised the dad to call himself whatever he wants to call himself, for this exact reason. ?One person?s understanding of what a label means is always going to be different from someone else?s, simply because every family is different. ?Divisions of labor, time spent with kids, hours spent at work, the relative importance of family versus work and vice versa are all defined at an individual family level. ?No matter what I call it, no one outside my family will really know what I do. ?My friends or perhaps even some blog readers may have an idea of the role I play in my family, but even then it?s limited to the words and pictures I find time to share and the time of day I manage to post an update. ?Beyond that, no who knows if I?m writing from an immaculately cleaned house after checking everything off my to-do list, if I?m blogging after putting my kid in front of the TV,?or if I?m surrounded by leftover breakfast dishes, un-showered at 10:30 in the morning and forcing myself to make blogging a priority while Chris is still home to build puzzles on?the?(very furry) living room floor. ?Now that I?m my own boss, no one knows how many hours I?m clocking or what time of night I?m doing them. ?The people who see me come into to yoga for a rare 10 am, Monday morning class might think I?m one of those mothers with no outside income, a nanny, and a housekeeper, rather than the mom who is lucky to find an hour and a half each week to focus on herself and knows doing so will mean giving up sleep later.

No matter what the title or label is, no one will ever truly understand what I or you or the mom or dad on?the?other side of the blog post does, and?that?s ok. ?We don?t need a qualifier to?explain?our contribution. ?We don?t need to explain it at all. ?The people who matter, our children and our partners, know our contributions and that is good enough.

Avira Antivirus Premium 2013

How much would you pay for antivirus antivirus protection? And how much would you pay to make that protection better? Avira Antivirus Premium 2013 has some features that the company's free antivirus doesn't, and it scored a bit better in my hands-on tests. However, I'm not entirely sure that those slightly better scores merit the product's $29.99 price.

The premium edition adds cloud protection, behavior-based malware detection, and access to remote-control tech support. Its Mail Protection feature checks incoming messages and attachments for malware, but if you also want spam filtering you'll need to upgrade to Avira's full security suite. The free and premium antivirus products display controls for all the components of the full suite, with controls for unavailable components grayed out.

Tough Installation
As with the free edition, getting Avira installed on my malware-riddled test systems was a challenge. I did learn from my previous experience that Avira's bootable Rescue Environment can solve quite a few installation difficulties.

For those problems not solved by the Rescue Environment, I turned to tech support. One specific benefit of the premium edition is that you get full access to support, up to and including hands-on remote-control diagnosis and repair of problems with the program. As it turned out, tech support managed to solve my remaining problems via email and live chat.

Avira's cleanup of infected files did cause some collateral damage on a few systems. On advice from tech support, I replaced specific system files with copies from a clean virtual machine running the exact same Windows version. I also could have restored files using a Windows installation CD but alas, I don't have one for Windows XP SP3.

Average Malware Cleanup
Avira Premium definitely cleaned up my infested test systems better than Avira Antivirus Free 2013. It detected 76 percent of the threats, which is precisely average for recent products, while the free edition detected just 71 percent. Avira Premium's overall score of 6.2 points definitely beats the 5.7 points earned by the free product.

Other products have done quite a bit better. Norton AntiVirus (2013) and Kaspersky Anti-Virus (2013) both detected 89 percent of the samples. Norton and Webroot SecureAnywhere Antivirus 2013 share the top score in this test, 6.6 points.

Like quite a few current products, Avira Premium detected 100 percent of the samples that try to hide their activities using rootkit technology; the free edition caught just 80 percent. Avira Premium's rootkit removal score of 8.0 points is good, but nowhere near rootkit-killer Kaspersky's 9.4 points. For details on my malware removal tests, see How We Test Malware Removal.

Related Story

Effective Malware Blocking
Avira Premium also beat its free cousin in my malware blocking test, but just barely. The free edition detected 92 percent of the samples and scored 9.2 points, while the premium edition detected 95 percent and scored 9.3 points.

Webroot topped this test with 100 percent detection and an impressive 9.9 point score. Trend Micro Titanium Antivirus+ 2013 , SecureIT, Daily Safety Check Home Edition , and BullGuard Antivirus 2013 all managed 97 percent.

Avira did score a perfect 10 for blocking rootkit samples, but so did fully half of the products tested with this same sample set. To learn just how I perform the malware blocking test, please see How We Test Malware Blocking.

Related Story

I also attempted to download my current set of samples again, to check on Avira's promised Web protection. Of course quite a few of the URLs are no longer functional. Of those remaining, Avira Premium blocked 64 percent, the same as the free edition. The only difference was that it blocked some threats earlier in the download process.

PFT: Bills' Kelsay rips teammates' effort

Dallas Cowboys v Carolina PanthersGetty Images

The guy who hired Ron Rivera was fired yesterday, which means Rivera?s realistic about what could happen next.

The Panthers coach said after the firing of general manager Marty Hurney that he thought he was safe, but understands the evaluation that?s happening now.

Asked if he felt like he was coaching for his job the next 10 weeks, he said that?s been the same his entire career.

?I always feel like I?m coaching for my job,? he said. ?It?s just like when I was a player. I was drafted in the second round in 1984. For nine years, I came into that facility in Chicago, wondering if I was going to get cut.

?This is no different. I come to work like I did as a player, and that?s to do the best I can.?

It is different, though.

At one point, the best thing Rivera has going for him might have been the two years remaining on his $11.2 million contract. Owner Jerry Richardson let John Fox ride into a lame duck year no one wanted because he didn?t want to be on the hook for $11.4 million in coaching salaries (including assistants who were under contract).

But Jerry Richardson fired his sons, and now he fired the guy he trusted to rebuild his franchise, a guy he had ? and make no mistake, still has ? a deep relationship with. Hurney was practically family to Richardson, and it?s no accident there was no press conference yesterday in the aftermath of an emotional decision.

Rivera?s just the new guy, a guy with a 7-15 record. And with a new GM coming in at some point, he has little security other than the possibility Richardson wants to save some more money.

Rivera also can?t promise anything to the rest of his staff. Asked Monday if firing assistants was a possibility, he avoided a straight answer.

?This is a process that we?re going to go through as far as an evaluation and we?ll see how things go,? Rivera said staff changes. ?If that?s what has to happen eventually, then yeah ? maybe that?s what happens. Do we cut players? Yeah. If we have to, maybe that?s what we?ll have to do.?

And maybe Richardson will be willing to bite the bullet for coaching contracts that are still on the low end of the scale this time, if that?s what his next GM wants him to do.

Summer babies less likely to be CEOs

ScienceDaily (Oct. 23, 2012) ? Sauder School of Business researchers at the University of British Columbia have found that a person's date of birth can affect their climb up the corporate ladder.

The Sauder study shows that only 6.13 per cent of an S&P 500 CEO sample was born in June and only 5.87 per cent of the sample was born in July. By comparison, people born in March and April represented 12.53 per cent and 10.67 per cent of the sample of CEOs.

"Our findings indicate that summer babies underperform in the ranks of CEOs as a result of the 'birth-date effect,' a phenomenon resulting from the way children are grouped by age in school," says Sauder Finance Prof. Maurice Levi, co-author of the study to appear in the December issue of the journal Economics Letters.

In the United States, cut-off dates for school admission fall between September and January. The researchers determined that those CEOs in the sample born between June and July were the youngest in their class during school, and those in March and April were the oldest. This takes into account children born in months close to the cut offs who were held back or accelerated.

"Older children within the same grade tend to do better than the youngest, who are less intellectually developed," explains Levi. "Early success is often rewarded with leadership roles and enriched learning opportunities, leading to future advantages that are magnified throughout life."

Levi and his co-authors, former Sauder PhD students Qianqian Du and Huasheng Gao, investigated the birth-date effect in a sample of 375 CEOs from S&P 500 companies between 1992 and 2009.

"Our study adds to the growing evidence that the way our education system groups students by age impacts their lifelong success," says Prof. Levi. "We could be excluding some of the business world's best talent simply by enrolling them in school too early."

Campaign surrogates shore up support in final days

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama has Springsteen. Republican Mitt Romney has his sons.

They, along with dozens of other celebrities and elected officials, are blitzing through battleground states in the White House race's final days. Their goal: give the presidential campaigns a daily presence in key states even when the men at the top of the ticket (and their running mates) pitch for votes somewhere else.

But these surrogates aren't just viewed as a bonus by the campaigns. They're deployed strategically to shore up crucial constituencies.

That's why Bruce Springsteen and Bill Clinton, two heroes of the middle class, campaigned together last week in Ohio, where white, working-class voters make up about half the electorate.

"This is not a complicated decision," Clinton said there. "If somebody saved my economy, I'd be for him."

Obama's campaign also sent Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, a prominent Jewish politician, to heavily Jewish South Florida this week. And Sandra Fluke, who gained notoriety during the political debate over contraception earlier this year, has been appealing to women voters in Colorado and Nevada.

Romney's campaign has turned to Florida Sen. Marco Rubio to rally Hispanic voters in his home state, as well as in Colorado and Nevada, battlegrounds with big Hispanic populations. Former GOP nominee John McCain, who twice won New Hampshire's Republican primary, has been campaigning there for Romney. And Rick Santorum has sought to burnish his GOP primary rival's conservative credentials in North Carolina.

Romney's five adult sons have been among his most effective surrogates. Their focus in countless campaign appearances across the country has been to show their father's softer side. Romney has used one son in particular, Craig, a fluent Spanish speaker, to help broaden his appeal to Hispanic audiences. Craig Romney addressed the Republican convention in Spanish and also has recorded numerous Spanish-language radio ads for his father.

"Between my five kids and my brothers, there are 18 grandkids now that my dad has," son Josh Romney told voters in Virginia this month. "So he thinks about those 18 grandkids. This is why he's in the race."

Obama has popular kids, too. But at ages 14 and 11, don't expect to see Malia and Sasha holding solo campaign events in the dwindling days of the race. In fact, the Obama girls have been largely absent from their father's re-election campaign, except for a brief appearance with their parents at the Democratic Party's national convention.

A look at other key surrogates for Obama and Romney:

THE WIVES:

Like her sons, Ann Romney has used her campaign appearances to vouch for her husband's character. She's become a regular on the talk-show circuit, appearing on "The View," ''The Tonight Show" and even co-hosting "Good Morning America." Mrs. Romney also has been dispatched to Pennsylvania, an Obama-leaning state where polls have tightened. Her trips there are aimed at giving the Republican ticket a foothold in the state without having to deploy the candidate himself.

First lady Michelle Obama is perhaps her husband's most popular surrogate, drawing thousands of people to her rallies and front-page coverage from local newspapers. Her travel schedule is also steeped in strategy. It's the first lady keeping up the Obama presence in North Carolina, a state seen as a longshot for the president and one he hasn't visited in more than six weeks. She's also been a frequent visitor to Wisconsin, allowing her husband to travel elsewhere while she motivates voters in a state where the campaign feels confident.

THE STARS:

Obama's celebrity connections go beyond Springsteen. Long a hit with the Hollywood crowd, the president also has the backing of actresses Rashida Jones and Ashley Judd and rock star Jon Bon Jovi, all of whom have held events throughout the Midwest. Actor Morgan Freeman also lent his celebrity cache to a recent television advertisement promoting Obama's economic record.

Romney has celebrity backers as well, including country singer John Rich, comedian Jeff Foxworthy and former Denver Broncos quarterback John Elway. But they tend to appear alongside the Republican nominee at rallies, helping energize the crowd, rather than hold solo events.

THE CABINET:

One advantage of running as an incumbent is the Cabinet.

Education Secretary Arne Duncan's speeches on school reform and Labor Secretary Hilda Solis' interviews about falling unemployment aren't technically campaign events. But they're all about promoting the president's policies.

The campaign also has taken advantage of loopholes in federal election rules that allow Cabinet secretaries to campaign if they're appearing as private citizens, not in their official capacity.

That means Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, a former Colorado senator, frequently shows up at campaign events in his home state. U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk, who is black, joined a recent get-out-the-vote bus tour in North Carolina, where Obama needs big turnout from African-Americans. An email announcing Kirk's participation noted he was appearing "in his personal capacity" and urged reporters to refrain from using his official title.

Steal this post!

Post image for Steal this post!

As usual, at first there was nothing, then I sat down with some coffee for a few hours, and then there was something : a collection of words that might give you a good idea or teach you to do something. It wasn?t always brilliant, but I made it myself and I hoped you like it. As of today I?ve done this 250 times for this website.

When it?s done I click publish and set it free. Within a few seconds it?s in a thousand places. On a bench in Prospect Park, looking up from someone?s Android. Glowing on a white-blue iPad screen in a midwest dorm room. Waiting behind an envelope icon in some accountant?s Outlook, in Brisbane. Any stranger who finds it can beam it someone else a few minutes later, anywhere they want.

I like that this can happen. This is the future. It has never been easier to find the like-minded, to broadcast your personality, to click with a kindred mind in another city or on another continent, to find an audience for your creative thing you do. I love that I live now and not some other time.

As a consumer of creative works, it?s also easier than ever to find what you value, at least of the type that comes in the form of words, images, sounds, or anything else than can fit through a cable or shoot through the airwaves. Information is a boring word for it, but that?s what it is, and a lot of it has real value to us.

Today?s free flow of information also means it?s harder than ever to retain control of what you create. That seems like it would almost defeat the possibility of actually selling your work, given that anyone can find information on the web and have their way with it. People who create digital products today have to deal with an issue that the brick-and-mortar era never did. You can?t tie anything down, and everything you offer can be duplicated, by anyone, anywhere. You can?t lock up when you leave the shop at night. Once they?re on the internet, your wares are up for grabs.

It?s easier than ever to steal. You can lift someone else?s words, songs, pictures and tell people they are yours. Or, at least, you can neglect to tell people they aren?t yours.?

I felt violated the first time this happened to me. Someone had taken an article of mine and pasted it onto a throwaway blog filled with lifted content, plastered with ads. There was no mention of me or Raptitude. I wouldn?t have known, except that there were links in the post that pointed to other posts in my archives. I saw traffic coming through them and found it that way. I don?t remember what I did. I think I left a snarky comment.

Now it happens a lot, and I don?t do anything about it. I don?t feel like I?m losing any ground to throwaway blogs just because they?re riding my content.

People reprint my stuff all the time, and most are courteous enough to ask permission, and give proper attribution. The other day though, I discovered a new low in content-ganking. Someone is ripping me off even more blatantly, in a way I haven?t seen before.

I found a link on Twitter pointing to my 88 Truths post. The tweet contained a few lines I?ve written, and a link to a suspicious URL ??http://businessresourceideas.com/88-truths.

If you click that link, you?ll be taken to an exact copy of my site, except it?s under the businessresourceideas.com domain.

Once you click through, you read the article as normal. It looks just like Raptitude. My name and my picture. When you?re done, if you scroll up to the top (something people do when they either want to learn more about the site they?re on, or want to go somewhere else) a popup box appears, saying ?Before you go, please take a look at this special offer.?

The only button to click is ?OK? and even if you try to close the window by clicking the X in the corner, you are still taken to a sales page for some make-easy-money-online product.

Bloggers and other web people know that the limiting factor in any online business model is traffic. If you?re selling something, a certain percentage of the people who see your offer will buy. This percentage (called a conversion rate) is always very small, but no matter what it is, increasing the amount of traffic per month will increase the number of sales per month.

So once you have an offer on the table, all you need to make money is to get a consistent flow of eyeballs looking at it. Traffic is hard to get though. There are hundreds of millions of people using the internet daily, but there are also hundreds of millions of websites competing for their attention. To build an audience for your website, you need to be consistently offering something of value.

You can also buy traffic, by paying for ads. When you Google something, there are always a few prominent sponsored links that come up. These people are buying traffic ? which is fair too, because they are offering something of value in order to get it. If they don?t have good content to offer in exchange for people?s attention, then at least they have money.

Or you can try to beat the system with trickery. There has always been a something-for-nothing crowd, and they never seem to be a happy or healthy bunch. Cheat gamblers, pyramid schemers, alchemists.

Our friend ?Nathaniel? at businessresourceideas.com has a Twitter stream full of similar links. He finds an article that has gone viral ? and therefore has demonstrated it has value ? then puts the whole page up exactly as ?he found it, only under his domain. When the popup window appears, the user is supposed to think it?s coming from the person who wrote the article they just enjoyed. So he is piggybacking not only the content created by others, but the trust of their readership.

We all want to receive value. In other words, we all want to get paid ? whether it?s in money or accolades or attention. That?s why most of us have jobs. We offer value for a different kind of value. We make an arrangement with a business to sell some of our time and effort, in exchange for something else that is of value. This is a pretty universal expectation among human beings, that we know we have to give to get. No input without output.

There is a sad class of people out there who are determined to participate only on the receiving end. They aren?t prepared to offer anything of value to the outside world, hoping that somehow if they can just focus extra-hard on extracting value from the world around them, they?ll never have to supply any.

If you didn?t really think much about it, it might seem like minimizing giving while maximizing taking is a high-profit strategy. But I don?t think it works. This summer somebody did a thousand dollars? damage to my car door just to steal the coins in the console. His overhead on the venture was probably zero but I don?t imagine he?s going to retire any time soon. I?d rather be the person getting robbed.

Obviously pretend-businessman Nathaniel doesn?t have my permission to do what he?s doing with my content. The whole thing doesn?t make me mad though. I thought about concealing the link to his version of my site, so that he doesn?t receive any more traffic other people earned for him. But I don?t mind sending him some traffic. He needs help. In fact, I want you to see it. Nathaniel?s pathetic scheme is what it looks like when you have nothing to give.

The odd person might buy the get-rich-quick product being linked to, and Nathaniel might make thirty dollars even though he didn?t create anything of value for others. I guess you could say he beat the system. I wonder how quickly he?s going to get rich.

He and other content thieves are no threat to the online creative community, because that community understands something he doesn?t. They create and they give, and so they will always be richer.
