Warmer Water Leads to Male Offspring -- if You're a Fish (Time.com)

To a list that includes extreme weather patterns and disappearing polar bears, you can add another dispiriting effect of climate change: too many males. Three years ago, Francesc Piferrer and other scientists working at Barcelona's Institute of Marine Sciences proved that rising water temperatures caused some species of fish to produce a disproportionate ratio of males to females. Now, Piferrer and his team have gone on to discover something of a mechanism behind that imbalance.

Most fish species don't have the X and Y chromosomes that differentiate the sexes in humans. In fact, at least 40 species of fish -- as well as many reptiles -- are more dependent on temperature than genes when it comes to separating the boys from the girls. In these TSD (temperature-dependent sex determination) species, the sex of offspring is fixed by temperatures experienced during embryonic development. In the 2008 study, Piferrer's team showed that in a species like the Atlantic silverside, a water-temperature increase of 4?C could result in a population that was 98% male. (See "The End of the Line.")

But until now, no one has been able to explain how exactly that process works. "One of the questions that came out of that earlier study," says Piferrer, "was, How can temperature affect the developmental fate of the gonads when they're not even formed yet?"

In their new study, published Dec. 29 in the scientific journal Public Library of Science, Piferrer and his co-authors argue they've found at least a partial answer: epigenetics. The word refers to inheritable changes in gene activity that are caused by things other than alterations to the DNA sequence. "Think of it like a book," explains Piferrer. "The words that are printed in the book are the DNA. The ones you write in pencil in the margins are epigenetic."

In the case of the European sea bass that the team studied, an epigenetic process called DNA methylation suppresses the enzyme that converts male hormones into female ones -- a conversion necessary for the formation of ovaries in nonmammal vertebrates. And DNA methylation, it turns out, is susceptible to temperature. Raise the water temperature and methylation increases, which means that more of that critical enzyme (called aromatase) is suppressed. And that means fewer females. (See how a San Francisco oil spill took its toll on fish.)

The scientists saw the greatest impact during the first 20 days of a fish's life, an embryonic stage that comes before gonads develop. When fish were exposed to a 3?C or 4?C increase in water temperature during that time, the normal 50-50 ratio between the sexes skewed 80% male. "What this shows," says Piferrer, "is that conditions at the very beginning of life continue to have important effects through the animal's life."

It also helps explain the heavily male populations of many fish farms. Sea bass in the wild generally spawn in water that is 13?C to 17?C. But most hatcheries keep sea-bass larvae in 21?C water.

More sobering are the potential effects in the wild. The International Panel on Climate Control predicts that seawater temperatures will rise at least 1.5?C this century, a rise that, by Piferrer's calculations, is enough to alter sex ratios in some populations. Some populations of canary rockfish are already showing more males than females. Although the wide number of variables has so far prevented scientists in those cases from pinpointing a single cause for the imbalance, Scott Heppell, a fish biologist at Oregon State University, notes, "The data shows a skew toward males, and the modeling shows that if this skew is real, then the population is in more trouble." (See how eating fish may lower your risk of Alzheimer's.)

Migration and other forms of adaptation may protect TSD species from extinction. And Heppell notes that by itself, a sex-ratio imbalance is less worrying than other climate-change-induced threats to the seas. The cumulative effects, however, are another story.

"Say that some species are spawning at slightly the wrong time, so their offspring can't find food. And their metabolisms are running ever so slightly higher because of increased temperatures. And then you add in this DNA methylation, so you get a skewed sex ratio," says Heppell. "It adds up. It's death by a thousand cuts."

Rick Santorum is in third place in Iowa, new CNN poll says (The Ticket)

DUBUQUE, Iowa -- After spending a majority of the campaign season at the bottom of the polls, Rick Santorum is seeing a last-minute rise in Iowa just days before the Republican caucuses, according to a CNN survey released Wednesday.

The poll of registered Republicans in Iowa shows Mitt Romney leading with 25 percent, Ron Paul in second with 22 percent and Santorum in third with 16 percent, his largest showing yet. Newt Gingrich, who led in the state just a few weeks ago, was fourth with 14 percent. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

When asked about the new poll numbers during a campaign stop at a furniture store here on Wednesday afternoon, Santorum said he had heard of them yet.

"I feel very, very good about how things are going and it's nice to see that reflected in some of the polls, but we have a lot of work to do. A lot of work," he said when a reporter informed him of his new standing in the state.

Keating Holland, the polling director for CNN, says most of Santorum's support comes from religious conservatives:

"Most of Santorum's gains have come among likely caucus participants who are born-again or evangelical, and he now tops the list among that crucial voting bloc, with support from 22 percent of born-agains compared to 18 percent for Paul, 16 percent for Romney, and 14 percent for Gingrich."

Illini Arrive In California 12/27/11

Oakland, California-The Fighting Illini have arrived in California to begin preparations for the Fight Hunter Bowl in San Francisco.? The game will be played Saturday.? The 6-6 Illini will face the 6-7 UCLA Bruins.

Tuesday the Illini held their first workout in California at tiny Laney College.

A victory for the Illini would take some of the sting out of their second half collapse this season.? They've lost six straight games and head coach Ron Zook was fired.

A victory would also make Illinois history because it would be the first time the Illini have won bowl games in back-to-back years.

Illini quarterback Nathan Scheelhaase is looking forward to that opportunity.? To hear his comments click on the media player.

County church burglar caught

??? WAHOO ? An arrest has been made in a recent string of church burglaries.

??? Saunders County Sheriff Kevin Stukenholtz reported that Dustin Robbins, 26, of Wahoo was arrested on Dec. 22 in Wahoo.

??? Robbins was arrested on a felony forgery warrant from Douglas County. Stukenholtz noted that the circumstances of that forgery clearly tied Robbins to the December church burglaries in Saunders County.

??? Robbins allegedly took Salvation Army vouchers from one of the churches and attempted to cash them at a business in Omaha by forging the pastor?s signature.

??? ?We?d been in contact with Douglas County and worked with them in order to get an arrest made,? said Stukenholtz.

??? Stukenholtz said another significant point of the arrest was that the county made use of the United States Marshals Fugitive Task force, of which Saunders County Sheriff?s Deputy Joe Smaus is a member. Because he is a member, the county has access not only to the task force, but many of the U.S. Marshals? other fugitive apprehension resources.

??? ?Thanks to his involvement, we were able to make use of their resources,? said Stukenholtz. ?That?s the benefit we?re seeing from having someone involved in that task force.?

??? While the forgery charge was the only one made against Robbins as of late last week, Stukenholtz said his department had reason to believe Robbins could also be tied to other residential burglaries in Saunders County.

??? At least eight burglaries were believed to have occurred in Saunders County churches between Dec. 5 and Dec. 14. Communities impacted by the church burglaries included Ceresco, Ithaca, Wahoo, Mead and Colon.

??? In these burglaries, the thief broke into the churches in the overnight hours and rummaged thought the building, apparently searching for cash.

??? Stukenholtz added that Robbins might also be tied to other residential burglaries in the area and was, at the time of his arrest, out on bond in connection to another burglary charge.

Tainted milk causes Chinese outrage

From Haolan Hong, CNN

December 27, 2011 -- Updated 0651 GMT (1451 HKT)

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Chinese dairy company 'sincerely' apologizes to customers for the problems
  • The products, containing high levels of a potentially carcinogenic substance, have been destroyed
  • The company says the products did not go on sale and remained in storage
  • Chinese microblog users urge others to boycott the company's products

Beijing (CNN) -- Criticism of lax food safety standards at Chinese companies abounded on microblogging sites in China on Tuesday following the latest scare involving dairy products in the country.

Tests found that cartons of milk made by Mengniu Dairy Co., the largest Chinese dairy company, had excessive levels of aflatoxin M1, a substance that can cause liver cancer.

The tests were carried out by the Chinese Administration of Quality Supervision in an inspection of nationwide milk products on Saturday.

The toxin came from contaminated feed consumed by the cows that produced the milk, China's official news agency, Xinhua, reported.

The milk cartons did not make it to market but remained in storage during the inspection, according to a statement from the company on Sunday. Mengniu said that it had destroyed all the toxic milk as it sought to reassure consumers on its commitment to product safety.

Mengniu "once again would like to sincerely apologize to all consumers," said the statement. "We should earnestly learn from this lesson and comply with state and company quality and inspection standards with precision and care, making sure our product quality from every sector is approved in the future."

Users commenting on Chinese social media sites offered scathing opinions about the management of Chinese companies following Mengniu's admission of problems.

"Businesses in China are destroyed by Chinese businessmen themselves," said one user on Sina Weibo, the Chinese equivalent of Twitter. "Don't ever blame us on buying foreign goods."

"If I have a baby one day, I will also buy safer milk powder produced overseas," the user wrote Tuesday.

"Let us boycott Mengniu altogether, show the shameless businessmen our strength." said a posting by another user.

Food safety scandals have blighted the dairy industry in China since 2008, when melamine-tainted milk killed at least six babies and caused kidney stones and urinary tract problems in hundreds of thousands of children.

Twenty-one people were tried and sentenced for their roles in the scandal, and two of them were executed.

In April, the police in Southwestern China seized more than 26 tons of melamine-tainted milk intended for use in ice cream, according to local officials.

Journalist Xiaoyu Luo contributed to this report.

Argentine president diagnosed with thyroid cancer (Reuters)

BUENOS AIRES (Reuters) ? Argentine President Cristina Fernandez has thyroid cancer and will undergo surgery next month, her government said on Tuesday, adding that the cancerous cells had not spread.

Fernandez, 58, was easily elected to a second four-year term in October, vowing to deepen her unorthodox policies despite complaints from business leaders who say her heavy-handed management of the economy is stifling investment.

Fernandez was diagnosed with a papillary carcinoma that has not metastasized, said her spokesman, Alfredo Scoccimarro. The operation is scheduled to take place on January 4 and she is expected to take a leave of absence until January 24.

"The thyroid gland will have to be removed," said Buenos Aires-based cancer specialist Julio Moreno. "The prognosis is very good. The chances of being cured are 90 to 98 percent."

The cancer was detected last week during a routine check. Papillary carcinoma is the most common type of thyroid cancer and normally affects people under the age of 40, especially women.

A skilled orator fond of glamorous clothes, high heels and make-up, Fernandez still wears black as she mourns her husband and closest advisor, former President Nestor Kirchner, who died late last year.

When Kirchner died, many thought it spelled the end of the couple's idiosyncratic blend of state intervention, nationalist rhetoric and the championing of human rights in grains exporting powerhouse Argentina, the world's No. 3 soybean supplier.

But Fernandez pulled off a remarkable comeback on the back of a brisk economic expansion and an outpouring of public sympathy. She was re-elected with 54 percent of the vote, promising to stay true to her policies despite objections from Wall Street and international investors.

Latin America's No. 3 economy is growing at nearly 9 percent a year. But a worsening global economic outlook combined with entrenched high inflation at home are seen reining in Argentina's growth to about 4 percent next year.

Fernandez is one of several Latin American leaders to have cancer. Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez underwent chemotherapy earlier this year while Paraguayan President Fernando Lugo's lymphatic cancer is in remission.

And former Brazilian leader Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is being successfully treated for a cancerous tumor on his Larynx, according to his doctors.

Japan to enter dollar swap agreement with India

Reuters . Tokyo

The Japanese government is considering a dollar swap arrangement with India to provide emergency liquidity in case the European debt crisis reaches emerging economies, the Nikkei business newspaper said on Sunday.

The agreement would set the total swap arrangement at $10 billion, or 780 billion yen, the Nikkei said.

Both countries are looking to sign off on the arrangement next Wednesday, when leaders meet at a bilateral summit, the paper said.

The currency swaps are expected to support the Indian rupee as it continues to weaken against the greenback and Europe?s sovereign debt crisis hits India?s exports.

The dollar-swap arrangement with India would follow a similar agreement with South Korea in October.

Storm halts trains, cruise ships in Sweden, Norway (AP)

STOCKHOLM ? Authorities and local media say a storm sweeping across Norway and northern Sweden has disrupted train traffic and brought cruise ships on the famous Hurtigruten route to a standstill.

The Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute issued a class 2 warning for northern Sweden on Sunday, its second highest level. As a result, Swedish traffic authorities have canceled all train traffic in the area between Sunday evening and Monday morning.

Norwegian news agency NTB reported the storm also has forced two ships on the scenic Hurtigruten route to a standstill in Trondheim. It said around 400 passengers were stranded in the town in central Norway.

Durable goods orders up, but core demand is weak

(AP) ? Companies' demand for long-lasting manufactured goods rose by the largest amount in four months in November, driven by a jump in orders for planes.

The Commerce Department says orders to U.S. factories for durable goods rose 3.8 percent in November. It was the biggest gain since July. But so-called core capital goods, a proxy for business investment spending, dropped for a second straight month. They fell 1.2 percent.

The declines in business capital goods excluding aircraft raise doubts about a pocket of strength for the economy this year. Business investment spending has surged as companies stepped up orders to take advantage of tax breaks that are set to expire at year's end.

Manufacturing has been a bright spot for the economy. U.S. factory activity has been lifted by a surge in exports. But some economists are concerned that Europe's debt crisis will push that region into a recession, cutting demand in a market that accounts for about one-fifth of U.S. exports.

For November, orders in the transportation category rose nearly 15 percent. That reflected a 73 percent jump in demand for commercial aircraft after two straight declines. Orders for military aircraft rose. But demand for motor vehicles and parts edged down after a surge in October.

Excluding the volatile transportation sector, orders would have risen a more modest 0.3 percent in November, the third straight decline.

Factories that make primary metals such as steel reported a strong 5.2 percent increase in demand in November. And for heavy machinery manufacturers, orders increased 0.9 percent. But demand for electronics products and communication equipment declined last month.

Earlier this month, the Institute for Supply Management said its manufacturing index rose to 52.7 in November, up from 50.8 in October. Any reading above 50 indicates expansion. The November performance marked the 28th straight month of growth in the manufacturing sector.

Factory output had slowed in the spring, reflecting supply disruptions caused by the March natural disasters in Japan. With production recovering in Japan, supplies of automotive and electronic parts are now flowing more freely. U.S. factories have been able to resume more normal production after slowdowns earlier in the year

Evernote "memory aid" apps recall people, meals (Reuters)

PARIS (Reuters) ? If you have trouble putting a name to a face, or remembering where you ate that delicious morsel of food you are craving - and you have an iPhone -- help is now at hand.

Evernote, designed as a memory-aid application for storing text, audio and visual notes across multiple mobile devices and desktop machines has launched two new features - the Evernote Hello and Evernote Food apps.

The aim of Evernote, first launched in 2008 and now used by about 20 million people worldwide, is to function as a "second brain" to give people a better memory, Phil Libin, Evernote chief executive said.

The Evernote Hello app aims to transform and modernize the concept of the historic alphabet-based address book, he said.

"Current technology for remembering people is very antiquated," Libin told Reuters in an interview at LeWeb, a conference in Paris where about 3,500 of the world's top digital experts and entrepreneurs from 60 countries meet each year to discuss the state of the tech industry.

"Your brain doesn't remember people alphabetically -- you remember them based on what they look like, when you met them and the context."

Evernote Hello requires users to swap phones and add their name into the other person's phone. Users are then prompted to hold the phone up so it can automatically take their picture and add it to their profile.

Evernote Hello can then send each person an email containing the new information. It also creates a record of where they met, a picture of the location, a map and the address.

"The idea is that instead of an address book I get a really visual way of remembering everyone I've met," Libin said.

"It remembers everything that's happened around that encounter based on location, time and keywords and it pulls together all the information into a context."

Once added to Evernote Hello, people are displayed within a mosaic of faces.

When it is tapped, a face becomes a profile showing a history of all interactions the two people have shared. It also shows other people who have participated in the same meetings, location information and items related to meetings from the user's Evernote account such as notes and photos.

The Evernote Food app allows users to track and record social events surrounding meals using pictures, location and text. It can also be used to document favorite recipes and share them on Facebook, Twitter and email. Users can also write restaurant reviews or plan diets.

"Evernote Food helps you remember all your best meal experiences," Libin said. "We are trying to make beautiful experiences around the most important things to remember."

Both Evernote Hello and Evernote Food are available free for iPhone and iPod Touch.

New method for watching proteins fold

ScienceDaily (Dec. 23, 2011) ? A protein's function depends on both the chains of molecules it is made of and the way those chains are folded. And while figuring out the former is relatively easy, the latter represents a huge challenge with serious implications because many diseases are the result of misfolded proteins. Now, a team of chemists at the University of Pennsylvania has devised a way to watch proteins fold in "real-time," which could lead to a better understanding of protein folding and misfolding in general.

The research was conducted by Feng Gai, professor in the Department of Chemistry in the School of Arts and Sciences, along with graduate students Arnaldo Serrano, also of Chemistry, and Robert Culik of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics at Penn's Perelman School of Medicine. They collaborated with Michelle R. Bunagan of the College of New Jersey's Department of Chemistry.

Their research was published in the international edition of the journal Angewandte Chemie, where it was featured on the cover and bestowed VIP (very important paper) status.

"One of the reasons that figuring out what happens when proteins fold is difficult is that we don't have the equivalent of a high-speed camera that can capture the process, " Gai said. "If the process were slow, we could take multiple 'pictures' over time and see the mechanism at work. Unfortunately, no one has this capability; the folding occurs faster than the blink of an eye."

Gai's team uses infrared spectroscopy -- a technique that measures how much light different parts of a molecule absorbs -- to analyze proteins' structure and how this changes. In this case, the researchers looked at a model protein known as Trp-cage with an infrared laser setup.

In this experiment, Gai's team used two lasers to study structural changes as a function of time. The first laser acts as the starting gun; by heating the molecule, it causes its structure to change. The second laser acts as the camera, following the motions of the protein's constituent amino acids.

"The protein is made of different groups of atoms, and the different groups can be thought of as springs," Gai said. "Each spring has a different frequency with which it moves back and forth, which is based on the mass of the atom on either end. If the mass is bigger, the spring oscillates slower. Our 'camera' can detect the speed of that motion and we can relate it to the atoms it is made of and how that segment of the protein chain moves."

Even in a simple protein like Trp-cage, however, there are many identical bonds, and the researchers need to be able to distinguish one from another in order to see which of them are moving while the protein folds. One strategy they used to get around this problem was to employ the molecular equivalent of a tracking device.

"We use an amino acid with a carbon isotope marker," Culik said. "If it's incorporated into the protein correctly, we'll know where it is."

With a single carbon atom of the Trp-cage slightly heavier than the others, the research team can use its signature to infer the position of the other atoms as they fold. The researchers could then "tune" the frequency of their laser to match different parts of the protein, allowing them to isolate them in their analyses.

Similar isotopes could be inserted in more complicated molecules, allowing their folds to also be viewed with infrared spectroscopy.

"This technique enhances our structural resolution. It allows us to see which part is moving," Gai said. "That would allow us to see exactly how a protein is misfolding in a disease, for example."

The research was supported by the National Institutes of Health.

Historic visit to Libya by Pentagon chief Panetta (AP)

TRIPOLI, Libya ? U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said "the torch of freedom" has passed to the Libyan people and he pledged during a historic visit Saturday to Tripoli that the United States will do all it can to help the country move toward democracy.

But he and his Libyan hosts acknowledged the threat of Islamic militants gaining ground in this period of political uncertainty following the ouster and death of longtime dictator Moammar Gadhafi.

Panetta and Libyan leaders identified challenges for the government now forming, including how to gain control of the militias that overthrew Gadhafi during an eight-month civil war.

"This will be a long and difficult transition, but I have confidence that you will succeed in realizing the dream of a representative government," Panetta said during a news conference with Prime Minister Abdurrahim el-Keib.

"The torch of freedom that has passed throughout the centuries and now passes from nation to nation in the Middle East and North Africa burns brightly here in Libya. May it light your way to a future of peace, prosperity and freedom," Panetta said.

While his visit was brief, Panetta made history as the first U.S. Pentagon chief to set foot on Libyan soil.

He evoked U.S. history, too, with a visit to the cemetery presumed to hold remains of U.S. sailors killed in Tripoli harbor in 1804. Their deaths were memorialized in the famous "shores of Tripoli" line in the Marine Corps hymn.

Both Panetta and al-Keeb expressed confidence that the fledgling government will be able to reach out to the militias and bring them together.

"We know how serious this issue is," said al-Keeb, "We realize it is not matter of saying `OK, put down your arms, go back to work or do what you want to do.' We realize that there are lots of things that we need to be organized."

More broadly, Panetta said the revolts across the region represent a quest for sovereignty by the people, but they will all involve different approaches and challenges.

During meetings with the Libyan leaders, Panetta expressed concern about al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb militants gaining a foothold amid the chaos of an unfolding democracy. But they told him that the Libyan people will reject the terrorist group, said a senior defense official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the discussions were private.

Panetta's motorcade from the airport into the city provided views of the nation's violent past and future promise ? lush orange groves, carcasses of bombed buildings and charred and graffiti-covered compound once occupied by Gadhafi. Flying from rooftops were the green, black and red flags, adorned with a star and a crescent, belonging to the new government.

At one point, amid the graffiti splashed across the walls of Gadhafi's former compound was a short comment in English: "Thanx US/UK."

The visit also put the man who has led much of the U.S. terrorism fight over the past several years at the scene of one of the first American wars on terror, more than two centuries ago.

Panetta went to what historians believe is the gravesite of as many as 13 U.S. sailors killed in 1804, when the Navy ship Intrepid exploded while slipping into Tripoli harbor to attack pirate ships that had captured an American frigate.

As the story goes, governments along the Barbary coast had turned to state-sponsored piracy to raise money, attacking and taking over merchant ships, enslaving their crews and stealing their bounties. Unwilling to pay fees to protect its ships, the U.S. sent the Navy frigate Philadelphia to the region but it ran aground just off Tripoli and was captured.

President Thomas Jefferson sent a team to get the Philadelphia back or destroy it. Under cover of darkness, the Intrepid sailed into the harbor, killed about 25 pirates and burned the Philadelphia.

A few months later, Jefferson sent the Intrepid back to destroy as many of the pirate ships as possible. The plan was to pack the ketch with explosives, sail into the harbor and blow her up.

The 13 sailors never got to their destination. The ship exploded prematurely killing all aboard and the next day bodies washed ashore. They were buried outside Tripoli, but in 1949 the remains were moved to The Protestant Cemetery by the Libyan government.

On Saturday, Panetta walked into the small walled cemetery and slowly made his way to a corner where five large but simple white gravestones mark the graves of the American sailors. Markers on four of the stones read, "Here lies an American sailor who gave his life in the explosion of the United States Ship Intrepid in Tripoli Harbour, Sept. 4, 1804."

Panetta placed a wreath at the site and, after a moment of silence, placed one of his U.S. secretary of defense souvenir coins on top of one of the stones.

New life was breathed into the long-ago tale by Congress this year. Lawmakers, prodded by descendants of the sailors, added provisions to the defense bill ordering the Pentagon to study the feasibility of exhuming the bodies and bringing them home to America.

In a statement, Panetta said the recent effort to restore the cemetery is "a symbol of the values we share."

Officials said that Panetta made no specific offers of assistance to the Libyan leaders, and he told reporters that there was no discussion of providing military equipment or weapons.

"They have to determine what their needs are and what kind of assistance is required," he said. "And whatever they need, the United States will be happy to respond."

Ahead of Panetta's visit, the Obama administration announced it had lifted penalties that were imposed on Libya in February to choke off Gadhafi's financial resources while his government was using violence to suppress peaceful protests.

The U.S. at the time blocked some $37 billion in Libyan assets, and a White House statement said Friday's action "unfreezes all government and central bank funds within U.S. jurisdiction, with limited exceptions."

Ohio beats Utah State 24-23 in Potato Bowl (AP)

BOISE, Idaho ? Utah State is no stranger to tense, down-to-the-wire finishes, and the Aggies found a way to win each time in their final five regular-season games.

That streak of narrow wins ended Saturday when Ohio quarterback Tyler Tettleton scored on a 1-yard run with 13 seconds remaining to give the Bobcats a 24-23 victory in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl.

The loss was a heartbreaker for the Aggies, who were making their first bowl appearance since 1997 and seeking their first postseason win since 1993.

Behind a rushing attack that accounted for 345 yards, the Aggies had led the whole game ? at least until Tettleton and the Bobcat offense rallied in the final 2 minutes to spoil Utah State's best season in 14 years.

Despite the disappointing finish, coach Gary Andersen insists he's not about to let his team get down.

"This season has turned young men into men," Andersen said. "It's been unbelievably gratifying to get to this point."

The Aggies (7-6) close games late early in the season, notably to Auburn in the opener and later to Brigham Young. In 10 games this season, the outcome was decided by 35 points.

But the team turned things around at the midway point, and found ways to win down the stretch. The Aggies closed with a five-game winning streak and finished second in the Western Athletic Conference.

They played well Saturday, dominating the first half and building a 23-10 lead in the third quarter behind the running of Michael Smith and Robert Turbin.

Smith rushed for a career-best 157 yards on 12 carries and two touchdowns, including a 63-yarder on the opening possession of the second half. His 11-yard touchdown run later in the third put the Aggies up by 13 points. Turbin added 101 yards on 20 carries, his eighth game this season of 100 yards or more on the ground.

But this time, Utah State failed to seal the deal in the final quarter. On its last two possessions, Utah State managed just two first downs. And after taking over at its own 7 with 4:23 to go, Ohio came up with three straight stop to force a punt

Ohio took over with 2:02 remaining, just enough time for Tettleton to spoil the Aggies season.

"Everyone makes mistakes. Everyone wants to win, but everyone can't win," Smith said. "All I can do is be grateful I'm here to play this game. The sadness inside hasn't really hit me yet, because I'm shocked."

The Aggies also can point to missed opportunities.

On their first possession, the Aggies (7-6) drove to the 1, but Turbin was stopped short of the goal line on fourth down. The Aggies missed another chance late in the second quarter when a 39-yard field-goal attempt by Josh Thompson sailed wide right.

After the game, Andersen refused to point fingers, opting instead to see the game as critical for turning around a program that has struggled for years in the basement of the WAC.

"This is a tremendous, tremendous day for these kids," said Andersen, who was rewarded last week with a one-year contract extension. "It's tremendous opportunity for them to be here. It is a loss, I'm never going to sit back and say, `That's OK, we lost.' What I am saying is it's a learning tool for us.

"We won five close games in a row, and we lost some very close game football games. Our mindset is to keep fighting for the next season when we walk back in next month."

Sri Lanka unblocks 1 news website after month

(AP) ? Sri Lankan authorities agreed Thursday to restore access to a news website that had been blocked with four others for more than a month over alleged insults and character assassination.

The Telecommunication Regulatory Commission agreed to unblock srilankamirror.com on several conditions, including that it will not provide links to sites that are blocked or unregistered, said Saliya Pieris, counsel for the website. The site was partially available Thursday afternoon as some service providers had not yet lifted the block.

Rights groups had criticized the order blocking the sites as undemocratic. Sri Lankan laws do not restrict the press from criticizing leaders, but media can be charged for defamation.

In blocking the sites, the media ministry said they committed character assassination and insulted people including key political leaders. It also required news websites to register, bringing them in line with older media formats such as newspapers, radio and television.

As per the agreement reached in Supreme Court on Thursday, srilankamirror.com has delinked to the four blocked websites and it will delinked to the unregistered once as soon as it receives a list of them, the site's editor, Keluma Shivantha, said. He had filed a fundamental rights application in the Supreme Court against the blocking.

The news websites still blocked are www.lankaenews.com, srilankaguardian.org, paparasinews.com, and www.lankawaynews.com.

Last week, Free Media Movement ? a local media rights group ? also filed a fundamental rights application in the Supreme Court on the basis that the blockade breaches the people's right to information and freedom of expression. The case is scheduled to be heard next month.

Of the five sites, lankaenews is highly critical of the government and has been blocked previously. A number of threats and attacks have been made against it in recent years.

A columnist for the website has been missing for more than a year. The website's office was set on fire earlier this year and lankaenews blamed the government for the attack.

The U.S. Embassy in Colombo said last month it was deeply concerned. The statement called on Sri Lankan authorities and telecommunications firms "to stop activities aimed at blocking free access in Sri Lanka to all legitimate media websites, including Lanka-e-News."

Microsoft acknowledges the Windows Phone SMS bug and says fix is on its way

Windows Phone Mango tilesMicrosoft has confirmed the existence of an SMS denial-of-service exploit for Windows Phone that can reboot devices and kill access to messaging functionality.

The company says it?s exploring the issue and working on a fix.

The exploit?simply involves sending a text message to any Windows Phone 7.5 Mango?device, which causes the phone to reboot and disable the messaging hub.

It can also be triggered with a Facebook or Windows Live message.

WinRumors tested the exploit across multiple devices and found that it?s likely rooted in the way the Windows Phone Operating System (OS) messaging hub functions.

Luckily, it doesn?t appear that the exploit is widely known at this time, so Windows Phone users shouldn?t have too much to worry about yet.
Microsoft has the ability to push updates to Windows Phone devices Over-The-Air (OTA), which it will likely take advantage of to make sure users are fully protected.

Both Apple's iOS and Google's Android have faced SMS exploits as well, though according to reports, this particular issue seems more like a bug with Windows Phone rather than a sophisticated security breach.

Check out a demo of the exploit below:

Instant view: Service sector growth slows in November (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? The pace of growth in the vast U.S. services sector slowed in November to the slowest since January 2010, according to an industry report released on Monday.

New orders for U.S. factory goods fell in October for the second straight month, suggesting a possible softening in the manufacturing sector, which has supported the economic recovery.

COMMENTS:

MARC PADO, U.S. MARKET STRATEGIST, CANTOR FITZGERALD & CO. IN SAN FRANCISCO

"We are still showing growth within the ISM so it's not as if we went into negative territory it's just not as strong as you would like to see ... Overall an unimpressive ISM services number ... The focus is really on Europe this week. It will refocus back to our economy and our market next week."

ANDREW WILKINSON, CHIEF ECONOMICS STRATEGIST, MILLER TABAK & CO., NEW YORK

"There was a little bit of disappointment in the headline. The drag was largely from the employment component in the headline and while that is negative it does not necessarily support a downturn in the employment picture. The other components in the report, however, were broadly positive. Overall the economy continues in expansion territory."

ALEXANDER CHEPURKO, FOREIGN EXCHANGE ANALYST, FOREX CLUB, NEW YORK

"The market cares more about the European situation, the euro zone summit in particular and the ECB rate decision which will probably be a cut. Also the Greek budget vote on Wednesday. The data in the U.S. is divergent from that of Europe. The data in Europe is showing a recession and even if the U.S. data is not smashing, it still gives a bias to a lower euro against the U.S. dollar."

CARY LEAHEY, MANAGING DIRECTOR AND SENIOR ECONOMIST, DECISION ECONOMICS, NEW YORK

"This series has been pretty flat for the last six months and this survey shows a slow-moving service sector. That is pretty much in line with the market sense that though the economy has improved, it is still not growing very quickly. This is the first disappointing indicator we've seen in the last couple of weeks.

"The report supports the view that fourth-quarter GDP will reflect some investment in inventory. This is a second-tier report and does not generate the kind of interest that follows the manufacturing report that arrives a few days earlier."

MICHAEL YOSHIKAMI, PRESIDENT AND CHIEF INVESTMENT STRATEGIST AT YCMNET ADVISORS IN WALNUT CREEK, CALIFORNIA

"This shows the economy is clearly beginning to recover, and those who had been forecasting another recession will probably have to start rethinking things. But while the (ISM services) number is an improvement, we shouldn't get too excited because we still have subpar GDP growth and stubbornly high unemployment. But this is a good number and I think it will be a positive for the market."

VIMOMBI NSHOM, ECONOMIST, IFR ECONOMICS, A UNIT OF THOMSON REUTERS

"October factory orders fell by 0.4%, and with revisions represent the second month of contractions after September now shows orders having fallen 0.1% (had been a gain of 0.3%) due to a larger drop in durables. Both types of goods fell, durables were down 0.6% and nondurables were down 0.3%, with transportation responsible again for the decline as orders would have been up 0.2% excluding transportation (and up 0.9% in September)."

$99 Chinese Tablet Is MIPS-Based, Runs Android 4.0

ingenic_ainovoYou could be forgiven for overlooking the Ainovo Novo7, a 7-inch Chinese Android tablet, as likely just another me-too device to be sold in electronics districts next to fake iPhones and bulk cables. And in a way, that's what it is: at $100, it can't possibly be as well-built as the iPad or newer Galaxy Tabs, and the size and design aren't going to impress anyone. But it's got two things going for it: Ice Cream Sandwich and MIPS. Naturally to many people neither of those terms signify much of anything. Most people only care whether it runs Netflix and Angry Birds. But both these features point at an interesting breakage between the China and US markets, one that will only widen with time.

Astronomers find 18 new planets: Discovery is the largest collection of confirmed planets around stars more massive than the sun

ScienceDaily (Dec. 2, 2011) ? Discoveries of new planets just keep coming and coming. Take, for instance, the 18 recently found by a team of astronomers led by scientists at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech).

"It's the largest single announcement of planets in orbit around stars more massive than the sun, aside from the discoveries made by the Kepler mission," says John Johnson, assistant professor of astronomy at Caltech and the first author on the team's paper, which was published in the December issue of The Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series. The Kepler mission is a space telescope that has so far identified more than 1,200 possible planets, though the majority of those have not yet been confirmed.

Using the Keck Observatory in Hawaii -- with follow-up observations using the McDonald and Fairborn Observatories in Texas and Arizona, respectively -- the researchers surveyed about 300 stars. They focused on those dubbed "retired" A-type stars that are more than one and a half times more massive than the sun. These stars are just past the main stage of their life -- hence, "retired" -- and are now puffing up into what's called a subgiant star.

To look for planets, the astronomers searched for stars of this type that wobble, which could be caused by the gravitational tug of an orbiting planet. By searching the wobbly stars' spectra for Doppler shifts -- the lengthening and contracting of wavelengths due to motion away from and toward the observer -- the team found 18 planets with masses similar to Jupiter's.

This new bounty marks a 50 percent increase in the number of known planets orbiting massive stars and, according to Johnson, provides an invaluable population of planetary systems for understanding how planets -- and our own solar system -- might form. The researchers say that the findings also lend further support to the theory that planets grow from seed particles that accumulate gas and dust in a disk surrounding a newborn star.

According to this theory, tiny particles start to clump together, eventually snowballing into a planet. If this is the true sequence of events, the characteristics of the resulting planetary system -- such as the number and size of the planets, or their orbital shapes -- will depend on the mass of the star. For instance, a more massive star would mean a bigger disk, which in turn would mean more material to produce a greater number of giant planets.

In another theory, planets form when large amounts of gas and dust in the disk spontaneously collapse into big, dense clumps that then become planets. But in this picture, it turns out that the mass of the star doesn't affect the kinds of planets that are produced.

So far, as the number of discovered planets has grown, astronomers are finding that stellar mass does seem to be important in determining the prevalence of giant planets. The newly discovered planets further support this pattern -- and are therefore consistent with the first theory, the one stating that planets are born from seed particles.

"It's nice to see all these converging lines of evidence pointing toward one class of formation mechanisms," Johnson says.

There's another interesting twist, he adds: "Not only do we find Jupiter-like planets more frequently around massive stars, but we find them in wider orbits." If you took a sample of 18 planets around sunlike stars, he explains, half of them would orbit close to their stars. But in the cases of the new planets, all are farther away, at least 0.7 astronomical units from their stars. (One astronomical unit, or AU, is the distance from Earth to the sun.)

In systems with sunlike stars, gas giants like Jupiter acquire close orbits when they migrate toward their stars. According to theories of planet formation, gas giants could only have formed far from their stars, where it's cold enough for their constituent gases and ices to exist. So for gas giants to orbit nearer to their stars, certain gravitational interactions have to take place to pull these planets in. Then, some other mechanism -- perhaps the star's magnetic field -- has to kick in to stop them from spiraling into a fiery death.

The question, Johnson says, is why this doesn't seem to happen with so-called hot Jupiters orbiting massive stars, and whether that dearth is due to nature or nurture. In the nature explanation, Jupiter-like planets that orbit massive stars just wouldn't ever migrate inward. In the nurture interpretation, the planets would move in, but there would be nothing to prevent them from plunging into their stars. Or perhaps the stars evolve and swell up, consuming their planets. Which is the case? According to Johnson, subgiants like the A stars they were looking at in this paper simply don't expand enough to gobble up hot Jupiters. So unless A stars have some unique characteristic that would prevent them from stopping migrating planets -- such as a lack of a magnetic field early in their lives -- it looks like the nature explanation is the more plausible one.

The new batch of planets have yet another interesting pattern: their orbits are mainly circular, while planets around sunlike stars span a wide range of circular to elliptical paths. Johnson says he's now trying to find an explanation.

For Johnson, these discoveries have been a long time coming. This latest find, for instance, comes from an astronomical survey that he started while a graduate student; because these planets have wide orbits, they can take a couple of years to make a single revolution, meaning that it can also take quite a few years before their stars' periodic wobbles become apparent to an observer. Now, the discoveries are finally coming in. "I liken it to a garden -- you plant the seeds and put a lot of work into it," he says. "Then, a decade in, your garden is big and flourishing. That's where I am right now. My garden is full of these big, bright, juicy tomatoes -- these Jupiter-sized planets."

The other authors on the The Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series paper, "Retired A stars and their companions VII. Eighteen new Jovian planets," include former Caltech undergraduate Christian Clanton, who graduated in 2010; Caltech postdoctoral scholar Justin Crepp; and nine others from the Institute for Astronomy at the University of Hawaii; the University of California, Berkeley; the Center of Excellence in Information Systems at Tennessee State University; the McDonald Observatory at the University of Texas, Austin; and the Pennsylvania State University. The research was supported by the National Science Foundation and NASA.
